SPORTS Lady Eagles Split a Pair The Lady Eagles win

one at home and drop the second game on the road to complete the first half of district play at 3-2. Fairfield hosted the

Groesbeck Lady Goats on Tuesday. The Lady Goats last came to the Johnson Activity Center during the Fairfield Invitational Tournament in December and did not fare well. A much improved Groesbeck team came to Fairfield and stayed close through the first half, and the Lady Eagles won going away 61-32. Jasmine Griffin scored

two early baskets, Kathleen Chappell made a layup, and Ainsley Richardson hit a baseline three to end a streak of four in a row and the Lady Eagles built a 16-9 lead after one. Jarmaca Brown and Tiara

Tatum each had a pair of baskets in the second period to extend and build on a 33- 17 halftime lead. Baskets by Lady Goat post player Mandy Adams and freshman Bailey Johnson were an attempt to keep the game close. Tatum opened the third

with a three, and Bree Bossier followed with a short jumper and Griffin added two baskets and the Lady Eagles built a larger lead to coast to the 61-32 win. Jasmine Griffin led the way with 14 points, but lately Ainsley Richardson has had some valuable playing time and performed outstanding. She finished with a district high 12 points. The Lady Eagle defense forced 41 Lady Goat turnovers. Fairfield travelled to

Madisonville to complete the first half of district play. The Lady Mustangs sported the district top honors with a 4-0 record while Fairfield sat in a tie for second at 3- 1.

The Lady Mustangs opened

a 9-0 lead in the contest with three baskets by Freshman guard Lanique Nealey who scored eight in the period. Francheska Daniels made a basket with 2:00 remaining in the period to get the Lady Eagles on the board. She would make one on an offensive rebound and

put back to end the period trailing 13-4. Madisonville extended

the lead to double digits in the second period. Junior guard Lisa Nealey, sister to Lanique, had a 10 foot jumper and a three. Alexis Harris made a pair of free throws to lead 23-10 at the break. Griffin had a pair of baskets

to keep the game as close as that double figure deficit. The Madisonville Lady Mustangs were not charged a single foul in the entire first half. Jarmaca Brown hit a three

to open the third, and Daniels would hit a second during the period. Jasmine Schaffer made a shot and two free throws to keep the

Lady Eagles at arms’ length, but Fairfield did cut into the Madisonville lead and trailed 29-20 heading into the final quarter. Fairfield completely came

to life in the final quarter and made the game close in the final minutes. Tatum went coast to coast to lay it in to cut the lead to 29- 22. Harris had a couple of basket and added a foul shot on each to hold the lead. Gabby Ransom darted through for a basket and then bounced outside for a three and a personal 5-0 run that increased to 8-0, when Bossier hit a layup and was fouled to get the game to within five at 38- 33 with 3:40 remaining in the game. Bossier took two

beautiful assist passes from Richardson and got as close as three at 40-37. The Lady Mustangs closed things out at the free throw line with the Nealey sisters making four in the last couple of minutes and Lisa hit the final two with :40 seconds left to preserve the 42-39 win.

Bree Bossier had eight

points and Griffin and Daniels each had seven in the loss. Lanique Nealey led all scorers with 12 points and Harris finished with nine. The Mustangs lead the

district with a 5-0 mark halfway through the season. Mexia is second at 4-1 with their only loss in Madisonville and Fairfield sits at 3-2 with both losses on the road at Mexia and Madisonville. The schedule flips and the Lady Eagles will entertain both teams at the Johnson

remained unbeaten in 20- 12 with a pair of wins over the Groesbeck Goats and Madisonville Mustangs. The Eagles lead the district race at 3-0 along with the Mexia Blackcats, and they play each other Tuesday night at the Johnson Activity Center. The Eagles dominated

the Groesbeck Goats on Tuesday night at the JAC 70-43. The Eagles actually trailed for a bit but took control and never let up once they gained the lead. Sophomore post Bryson Gates was too much in the middle for the Eagles, and Groesbeck fell further behind in the pivotal district contest. Gates scored eight in the

first period, two on two nice assist passes from guard Aaron Heers. Heers also found Cooper Cole and Aaron Cain in the period, but Justin Langham hit a three from the top and a long two point jumper to grasp the lead at the end of the first period 13-12. The lead was quickly

erased on a Cole basket for the 14-13 lead. Groesbeck missed their first 12 shots of the period, and a Gates layup and a Cain three

pointer gave the Eagles a 20-13 lead. Omar Cooper hit a shot, but the Eagles made three consecutive baskets by Josh Brown, Jacob Gallegos and Cain. Danny Huckaby went the length of the floor in five seconds for a layin at the buzzer to make the halftime score 29-20. The first half lead by

Fairfield was very quickly erased on a basket from Graves, one from Cooper with a pair of free throws and a three by Huckaby to tie the game at 29. Graves and Langham kept pace with Fairfield baskets from Brown, Gates and Heers, and the game was tied again at 33. From there, the Eagles went on a 37- 12 run to complete the game. Brown hit a basket and Alex Ward made a double pump shot at the buzzer for the 45-35 lead at the end of three. Fairfield played one

of their most dominant quarters of the season in the fourth. The Eagles made 9-11 from the field and held Groesbeck to 1- 15 from the field winning the final period 25-8 in the 70-43 with. Cole scored six, and Gates scored seven in the period. Bryson Gates led four

Eagles in double figures with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Cain added 11 and Cole and Brown tossed in 10 each. Ward scored seven points and made five of eight free throws. Aaron Heers scored only four points but had a season high seven rebounds and tossed in eight assists. The Fairfield Eagles

travelled to Madisonville to take on the rival Mustangs on Friday. While Gates was the big scorer on Tuesday; it was different faces that led the way on the road. It has been this way most of the season as different players play well in different situations. Aaron Cain got the Eagles going in the first period with three straight baskets. The lead disappeared

at the end of the period when Keelan Jones and Marcus Tyler combined for eight points to take a 12-8 lead. Cooper Cole scored on a put back, and Ward finished the period with a basket and the score was tied at 12-12. Cain and Gates showed dominance in the paint with six points to build a slim lead. Patrick Cooper hit a jumper, and Tyler hit a three to tie the game for the fourth time in the half at 24-24. Ward finished the second in much the same way as he finished the first. His basket was true and proved to be the first half difference at 26- 24

Cooper made a shot for

the Mustangs, and that was the only one for a while. Cole hit a layup; Cain hit one from the other side; and Brown nailed a three to build the lead to nine midway through the third. Brown finished with three short jumpers and scored nine of 15 points in the period. The Eagles built a lead they would never give up at 41-29 heading into the final period. Four baskets, two by

Brown and one each from Ward and Cain, paced the final period in the 49-36 win. The Eagles defense was unbelievable in the last eight minutes of both games. They held the Goats and Mustangs to a total of 15 points in the final period to take convincing wins. The Fairfield Eagles sit on

top of District 20-3A tied with the Mexia Blackcats at 3-0. The upstart Westwood Panthers are 2-1. Fairfield will take
