sored by the Pantene company of hair prod- ucts, and encourages peo- ple, mostly women, to donate lengths of hair for human hair wigs for can- cer patients. LHS has one

of the strongest Beautiful Lengths programs in the country, and its donors were featured on a docu- mentary film last year. This year as the gym

filled, parents and friends snapped "before" pictures of the donors. The Lancer mascot wandered through the crowd, and loud rock music played. Students not donating filed in, tak- ing their places on the bleachers, or broke forma- tion to hug a donating friend. The volunteer cut- ters helped their donors shape their hair into pony- tails for easier cutting. LHS senior Helen Nei-

man carefully tightened a rubber band around one of Kayla West's ponytails. West, a freshman at Ply- mouth State University and a recent LHS graduate, has donated her hair three

previous times, she said. What was she feeling? "Excitement," she said. Neiman, West's best friend, said she was excit- ed when West told her she was coming back for the cut and asked Neiman to be her cutter. "It's nice to be involved in the process," she said.

Guests of honor filled

several rows of chairs in the front. They included Gov. John Lynch, Ellyse Davis, and the family of Ginger Davis (no relation), the LHS teacher who did the first "three, two, one" count at the premier cut in 2006. Davis died of can- cer this past spring, Juster said. Her husband, Step- hen, daughter Janet Dam- aske, and grandchildren Grace, an infant, and Noah, 3, came to see the cut and received a mount-

ed color photo of Ginger Davis doing that first countdown, the one Juster called "the call that started it all." Juster introduced Ell- yse Davis and said he had intended to invite her back when the school reached its 1,000th donor. With the 231 donors on the floor Fri- day, he had gone over that goal, he said.

In his opening remarks, Juster told stories about donors and recipients of Beautiful Lengths. "One woman," he said, "would always brush her teeth with the medicine cabinet open. She didn't want to see her face, her bald head." That changed, he said, when she received her nat- ural hair wig from the Amer- ican Cancer Society. Juster, who calls the continued on page 7
