16 - February 3, 2012 Lady Cougars Blow Bow out of The Den, Boys’ Hoops Improves to 10-2 by Marc Ayotte

After steamrolling through the regular season thus far with a 12-0 record, the Campbell girls’ varsity basketball team, on Tuesday, January 31, faced their most important challenge in their quest to repeat as D-3 state champions. The Bow Falcons traveled to the Cougar Den for the two team’s only encounter on the regular season schedule. With Bow bullying the rest of the division as evidenced by their 13-0 record, they stood just percentage points ahead of the Cougars for the top spot in the standings. As the division’s only two undefeated teams,

the winner of this crucial clash of basketball behemoths would take a giant step forward in claiming the regular season title and the state tournament’s number one seed that comes with it. The stage was set for an instant classic but what resulted was an anticlimactic affair that saw the host Cougars take a 4-2 first quarter lead inside the first minute of play and never look back as they went on to rock previously undefeated Bow by a score of 50-33. Just 15 seconds into the game, Bow’s Suzanne Barry gave her team a 2-0 lead – that was the last bit of enjoyment the Falcons had all evening long. A strong rebounding effort by Ashley Gannon, including an offensive rebound put-back for two, along with four first quarter points by Liz Pettis and Alex Trevains aided the Cougars in establishing a 12-7 lead after one. The Cougars doubled-up

Bow for the first time on the evening at 14-7 when Pettis scored on a beautifully executed inbounds play, four seconds into the second stanza. A steal by Becca Arnone and subsequent textbook baseball pass to Pettis for a lay-up gave Campbell a 16-9 lead with 6:42 left in the first half. After upping the lead to 18-9 a minute later, Campbell incurred a scoring drought. The next Cougar hoop came two and a half minutes later when Arnone scored on a nice feed from Neild, making it 20-11. Fortunately, Bow experienced a dry spell of their own and after Pettis took an offensive rebound and hit Neild with a full court pass for an easy hoop, the Cougars took a 24-13 lead into the intermission. of half time as their first basket, a jumper by Caitlyn Griffin, was not recorded until 2:09 had elapsed in the third quarter. However, the Cougars unfortunately matched the Falcon’s scoring ineptness early in the third. It wasn’t until nearly three minutes in, that a hustle play by Gannon sent a loose ball into Arnone’s hands who promptly converted the effort into a hoop, reestablishing the Cougar double digit lead at 26- 15. The Falcons narrowed their deficit to seven on a basket by Dina Tischofer with 4:30 remaining in the third, capping a 4-0 spurt. But that’s as close as Bow would get. A mini four point personal run by Arnone answered the Falcon threat, giving the Cougars a 30-19 lead at the half way point of the third. Each team proceeded to chalk up a half dozen points and heading into the final frame, Campbell held a 36-25 advantage. In a last gasp effort to battle back, Bow scored the first four points of the final quarter, chopping the Cougar lead to seven once again, at 36-29. Although Bow’s junior guard Lindsey Nerbonne regained her shooting touch by knocking down a couple of ensuing 17 footers, it was too little too late for the hopeful Falcons. Ahead 43- 33, Campbell went on a paralyzing, 7-0 run in the game’s final 2:24, establishing them as the undisputed leader in girls’ D-3 basketball. Offensively for the Cougars, the big three led

the way. Becca Arnone recorded five hoops to go along with five free throws in scoring 15 points. Freshman Hannah Neild had several eye- catching assists while recording 13 points. Liz Pettis played an excellent game, scoring 14 while giving a great defensive effort. The senior stalwart offered her assessment of the crucial win; “well I think that with the way we played defense tonight it made the all-around game easier. When we stop them, (Bow) it gives us more opportunity to score. The key was to play good defense and stop them from penetrating.” Precursor to the Bow Battle With their sights on the home court game against the Falcons, Coach Sean Flynn’s Lady Cougars used games against arch rival Conant and Newport as tune-up matches. Campbell shelled Conant 65-29, in a road game on Wednesday January 25. With respect to the 36 point win over the Orioles, Flynn although admitting that “a win is a win” added the atmosphere at the small Jaffrey gym was different this time. According to Flynn, without a profile player such as Conant’s three time player of the year Brooke Springfield, the rivalry lacked the intensity that has highlighted the matchups in recent years. The Cougars opened up a 39-14 half time lead and coasted from there. Hannah Neild led the CHS offense with 20 points while picking up 4 assists. Becca Aronone (15) and Liz Pettis (14) were the other Cougars in double digits. Arnone recorded a game-high 19 rebounds in dominating the glass.

Three days later, the Cougars forced 40

turnovers on their way to trouncing the Tigers of Newport by the score of 73-36. After a slim seven point lead at the end of one quarter, the Cougars dumped in 30 second quarter points, taking a commanding 43-19 lead into the locker room, thus putting the game out of reach. Becca Arnone scored 20 points, collected seven rebounds and eight steals to lead the Cougars. Hannah Neild and Liz Pettis also had nice performances. Neild contributed with 13 points, five assists and five boards. Pettis, in addition to her 12 points had seven helpers and four steals. The win put the Cougars at 12-0 heading into their important matchup with Bow. Boys Post a Pair of Road Wins Spotlighted by four-three pointers, Jackson Musco led the Cougars with a career high 16 point performance, as the boys’ varsity basketball team won their fourth straight game with a 74-49 thumping of the Tigers at Newport. The game was held on Saturday, January 28, after it was rescheduled from night before due to Newport not having school on Friday. The victory improved the Cougar mark to 9-2, keeping them in fourth place, one game ahead of both Hopkinton and Somersworth in the win column. Mike Vigeant continued his fine play, chipping in with 13 points. He was also the Cougar’s leading rebounder, pulling down nine boards. Elsewhere on the stat sheet, Jesiah Wade added 11 points and six steals as the Cougars controlled the game from start to finish. On January 31, while the Lady Cougars were dismantling Bow in The Den, Coach Roye’s team traveled to Bow to take on the Falcons. The Cougars once again used the recent scoring emergence of Jackson Musco to pick up their fifth win in a row, a 60-47 verdict. According to Roye, the Cougars got off to a slow start, but took control of the game in the second quarter which resulted in a slim four point lead heading into the intermission. A 20-10 advantage in the final frame, which featured the Cougars going 8 of 9 from the charity stripe, propelled Campbell to the victory.

Musco’s 13 point scoring effort, which featured three triples (seven in the last two games) was supported by double digit scoring from three other Cougars. Jesiah Wade and Nick Freson each pitched in with 11 points. Junior point guard Max Gouveia had a superb all-around game scoring ten points, pulling down seven boards and dishing out seven assists. John Houston and Jason Rodonis helped in the rebound department, registering seven apiece. Wade led the defensive effort, recording a game high eight steals. With nine players getting into the scoring column, Coach Roye noted that the win was “just another example of our bench being so deep.” The head Cougar added, “every name I call, they contribute. This was a good solid win with contributions from everyone.”
