by Marc Ayotte Things started out pretty nicely for Pelham when they played host to cross-town rival Windham in a dual wrestling meet on Wednesday, January 25. Kevin DeAngelo continued his hot streak on the mat when he gave Pelham a 3-0 lead in the team scoring, compliments of his 8-6 decision over Windham’s Dylan Swiderski in a 138 bout. However, the visiting Jaguars proceeded to take the next six matches before senior Josh Medeiros stopped the bleeding for the Pythons. As a result, Windham went on to defeat Pelham in the team competition by the score of 66-9. In picking up one of the Python’s two wins on the evening, DeAngelo scored an early take down to hold a 2-0 lead after the first period. Then a pair of near falls along with another take down by DeAngelo opened up an 8-3 lead after two. Swiderski battled back and pulled to with two points with a minute remaining, but strong wrestling by DeAngelo prevailed as he held on to the slim win by decision. As the meet continued, consecutive wins by Windham’s
Cocciardi, Fenton, Golden, Ferri, Armstrong and Sprague vaulted the Jags into an insurmountable lead. Ending the Jaguar’s streak was Pelham’s 120 pound entry. Medeiros jumped out to a 4-0 lead just 16 seconds into his match with Devin Marino before pinning the Jag at :47 of the first period. Austin Messina (WHS) ended the evening with a pin over Pelham’s Brian Gettings with just two seconds left on the second period clock. Although in defeat, Pelham’s Jared Boyden wrestled well in one of the meet’s most exciting bouts. A late third period reversal by Boyden gave him a 6-4 lead, but seconds later Armstrong answered right back tying the match and forcing over time. Twenty-three seconds later, Armstrong emerged with the 8-5 win by decision. Winnacunnet Invite On Saturday Pelham traveled to Hampton to compete in the
Winnacunnet Invite. Among the other schools participating, in addition to the Pythons, in the 14 team field were; John Stark, Campbell, Nashua South, Oyster River, Nashua North, Winnisquam, Londonderry and Lisbon (ME) making the trip south across the border. The Pythons received solid performances from Kevin DeAngelo, Brian Gettings, Jared Boyden and Josh Medeiros. After the meet, assistant coach Chris Thomas shared his thoughts regarding

wrestled through a lot of pain, I was proud to see him place fourth.” DeAngelo (138) added nicely to his season win total, picking up three more on the day against only one loss, good for a third place finish to lead the team. DeAngelo’s performance was culminated with an escape with two seconds left for a 7-6 win in the consi- finals over Kelly from Exeter. Brian Gettings started his day off with a loss before rattling off three consecutive wins to earn a spot in the consolation finals. There he lost to Campbell’s Ben Billings, but still earned a nice fourth place finish in the 126 weight division. Jared Boyden (106) had a see-saw day, mixing two wins with two losses. The Pelham sophomore picked up a 14-6 major decision win over host Winnacunnet’s Rosa before losing to Wyman from Manchester Central, 17-6 in consi finals. Boyden’s efforts also earned him a fourth place finish, one of three for Pelham on the day.
Josh
Medeiros picked up three wins while going down to defeat twice. Before losing in the consi finals, thus picking up a fourth place finish, Medeiros registered and impressive 18-4 major decision over Gaudreau from John Stark.

if you let him get the looks he wants, so that’s exactly what I didn’t let him do and it paid off. With the game being so close coming into the fourth quarter I knew Walker was going to come out hard so I had to come out harder. The reason why we won that game last night was because everyone contributed and it was overall a great team effort.” Coach Regan praised the efforts of his senior point guard; “Derek did an unbelievable job on Walker. He controlled the whole game at both ends of the court.” After a sensational night where he shot lights-out,
draining five three-pointers on his way to pouring in a game high 19 points, a stoked Jake Vaiknoras shared his thoughts on his performance and the team win; “It felt unreal. Growing up I watched my brothers playing and I told myself I was going to be there someday and here I am. This win feels good because we not only beat Portsmouth but we are finally starting to play team basketball. Everyone contributed to this game tonight and that’s the biggest part. Winning never felt this good.” Brett Bailey who scored 10 of his 13 points in the decisive fourth quarter commented on the team’s preparedness entering the final quarter; “The team and I all rely on one another and pick each other up when we’re down” adding that, “We were mentally
and physically prepared and it showed in the last minutes of the game. It was a big win, but now we’re focused on Hollis-Brookline.” Coach Regan sang the praises of Cheam and Bailey in the win; “Brett took over in the fourth, he was absolutely fantastic in the fourth quarter” adding that “Cheam just did everything – a complete game at both ends of the floor. The win improves Pelham’s record to six up and four down. Their next home game is on Wednesday, February 8 against Sanborn Regional.
