by Andrea Ganley-Dannewitz Officers who responded to the Red Roof Inn on Sunday to check the well being of a possibly intoxicated man ended up greeted by the man and all the drugs in his possession when he opened the door to his room. The call to police was made by an employee of the Red Roof Inn around 9 a.m. when the man, Pedro Martinez-Ortiz, 33, of Methuen, MA went to the front desk to request a different room because the toilet in his room was clogged. He was issued a new room, and when maintenance went to the first room a plastic bag containing a bunch of smaller baggies was in the toilet and found to be the cause of the clog. The employee that dealt with Pedro Martinez-Ortiz felt he may be intoxicated and may try to drive off and made the call to police. When officers arrived at the suspect’s new room he opened the door and in plain view was a large amount of powder cocaine, crack/ cocaine and heroin along with paraphernalia. As soon as he saw the officers he grabbed a bunch of the drugs and immediately attempted to start flushing them down the toilet but was stopped and subdued by the officers. Pedro Martinez-Ortiz was taken into custody without further incident. Officers seized all of the drugs, baggies, scales, a mirror, other paraphernalia, and $556 in cash as well as the suspect’s vehicle, which was to be searched later after obtaining a warrant. Police processed the suspect at Salem Police Department and he was held on $25,000 cash bail. He was transported
to Rockingham County Jail but jail staff refused to take Martinez-Ortiz due to a medical condition. He was taken to Exeter Hospital by Salem police and was cleared by an emergency room doctor, however the jail still refused to take him. Pedro Martinez- Ortiz was taken back to
Exeter Hospital and held there under the guard of Salem police until his arraignment at the 10th Circuit District Court in Salem. Pedro Martinez-Ortiz is charged with three
felony charges of possession of a controlled drug with intent to distribute, three felony charges of possession of a controlled drug, resisting arrest and falsifying physical evidence.

by Andrea Ganley-Dannewitz A 59-year old Revere, MA, man turned himself into Salem Police Department Saturday after warrants were issued for his arrest stemming from a road rage incident. The alleged incident occurred on December 10 in the parking lot of Annie’s Hallmark, 205 South Broadway. The suspect, Mario DePascale of Revere used his vehicle to block in the vehicle driven by the victims. At that time he exited his vehicle and began yelling and screaming profanities at the two people that were riding in the second vehicle as well as lunging at them. While the two victims tried to
quickly walk across the parking lot to avoid further confrontation, DePascale got back into his vehicle and struck one of the two victims in the arm with his vehicle. DePascale again exited his vehicle and grabbed one of the two victims by the neck and struck that person in the chest. When a call to 911 was made DePascale returned to his vehicle and peeled out, fleeing the area.
Officers obtained DePascale’s information at the scene and according to Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten, officers issued warrants for his arrest based on that information and as a result of the assaults.
Mario DePascale faces seven
charges, two counts of simple assault, disorderly conduct, failure to stop, felony reckless conduct, and two counts of false imprisonment.
He is free on $1,000 personal recognizance bail and will be arraigned at the 10th Circuit District Court in Salem.
