Eileen Jamieson Memorial Workshop

Eileen Jamieson was chair of AFT from October 1999 until she died suddenly on 31 December 2001, whilst still in offi ce. During her time on the board and whilst chair, Eileen was committed to developing the branch structure within AFT and promoting and helping branches. It was therefore felt that a lasting memory to Eileen would be an annual training workshop to be hosted by a branch and for AFT to support this workshop to enable as many people as possible to benefi t from the event.

We are pleased that this year Scotland have agreed to host the event with Eia Asen on Tuesday 29th May 2012

at the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh Title of workshop:

Mentalization-based practice with children and families

Presented by: Eia Asen

Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) focuses on dealing with emotions, which has proven to be a timely antidote to those systemic approaches that primarily focus on changing behaviours and belief systems. Mentalizing is a form of imaginative mental activity about others or oneself, namely, perceiving and interpreting human behaviour in terms of intentional mental states (e.g. needs, desires, feelings, beliefs, goals, purposes, and reasons). Mentalization-based therapeutic approaches have been developed from attachment and psychodynamic concepts and they enrich and complement systemic practices and techniques. MBT builds bridges between systemic and psychodynamic models of work.

During this workshop, Eia Asen will fi rst outline the theoretical underpinning of the approach and then illustrate it with many diff erent case examples and video vignettes. The emphasis of the workshop will be on the pragmatic application of the approach to work with children and families.
