This month will be a mixed bag of information mainly due to the wonderful weather we are having, there are several subjects of importance to cover.
If you live in frost prone areas and have your plants protected it will be OK to let them have some good sun but please keep an eye on the general weather forecast as it would be nice for it to stay this nice but we do not know what the weather will do and, after protecting plants up to this point, it would be a shame to see them damaged if there was any further adverse weather.
Secondly, if the weather does continue you will need to get into your garden and give it a really good cut back for the spring because it will make it a long growing season, so get your plants dealt with now so you don’t have to cut off flowers etc mid season because your plants have grown too large. I would still advise leaving the frost prone plants for now as these seem to do better once growing has definitely started.
Another very important notice is if you are going to clean or prune your palm trees get it done now. This time of year is normally downtime for the red weevil and therefore cutting the palms now is of massive importance, especially as the cold weather is not here at the moment meaning the little blighters will be starting to hatch quicker than normal. Baring this in mind if you need to prune your palm try to cut the crown up very high so the branches point more vertically. This means you will have less, to no pruning during the summer months, meaning less chance of attracting the palm weevil to your palms.
