Trademen’s Tales

Sometimes a little knowledge is not a good thing.

I say this because everyone nowadays seems to be a computer expert or has a nephew who is one. A gentleman came into the shop recently regarding an issue he had with his computer. Once Sebastian, our resident qualified techie with over 18 years experience, had taken a look it was obvious to him that this was caused by a conflict of two programs which the gentleman had installed onto his computer. Sebastian explained that the two programs were conflicting and would have to be removed. It was also obvious that the computer had never been cleared of temporary files or defragged and the recycle bin was full of everything that had ever been on the computer including programs which had been uploaded and partially deleted throughout the life of the computer. All in all a job of no more than a couple of hours but the gentleman decided to take it away and do it himself. A couple of days later he called in again as now his printer wasn’t working and he couldn’t access the internet. On inspection Sebastian found that he had deleted, not only the programmes, but also drivers, DLL files and other important information whilst doing his ‘clean up’. Yes, you’ve guessed it, a two hour job was now looking like much more including a total reinstall of Windows. At PC Highway we are always happy to give advice freely and do not take on jobs which we feel the customer can do themselves with a little help BUT, some things should be left to the professionals.
