Loving LifeLove Life 2012

We speak to motivational speaker, author and founder of ‘Syrus Consultancy’ Chris Syrus about his life journey and find out what’s in store for 2012

HM: So tell us about Syrus Consultancy? Syrus Consultancy ‘Delivering Creative Youth Services’ is a creative arts organisation that uses creative writing, spoken word, music and theatre to engage those considered hard to reach. Through partnerships with organisations such as Superact, we have an exciting new accredited course SEPE (supporting employability and personal effectiveness) Edexcel level 1. We have a great working relationship with prisons, schools, libraries and other youth establishments.

HM: Why do you think the creative approach to reaching youngsters is proving to be more successful than regular workshops? We use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and personal development techniques within our creative workshops. Our focus is on experiencing and doing rather than just the theory. Young people enjoy being active and challenging themselves to learn pieces and develop public speaking/performance skills. A lot of the learning and development is disguised in engaging activities. Young people develop key skills such as reading, writing and skills needed for employment such as good communication and working in a team. We are able to be flexible in our approach so that our workshops are youth led

HM: As a collective, how are your team able to engage these often hard to reach individuals?

Our team comprises of young individuals that are trained in music and theatre and do it as a career they are passionate about. As one of the lead facilitators I use my personal testimony of educating myself in prison to be able to become an established author, motivational speaker and spoken word artist. I encourage openness and honesty and I am able to inspire as an example of someone who is always challenging himself to achieve new goals.
