EMO/PCQHA Novice Championship Show NoviceAmateur ChampionWorking Cowhorse:
Jill Cunningham and Okies Starbuck Winning the EMO/PCQHA Novice Amature Championship for Working
Cowhorse was something that I did not realize would actually happen at the be- ginning of the 2011 showseason. Okies Starbuck (AKAOzzy) also qualified for the class in 2010 as well but we were not able to make that show due to injuries. So being able to compete and win this year was even more special than I could imagine. He and I sat out the 2009 year due to a suspensory ligament issue and part of 2010 was lost due to other injuries but I always kept a positive outlook that he and I would be back in the show pen as a team. In March of 2011 we did just that thanks to his vet Dr. Linda Lauper and trainer Ramona Koch with their careful guidance, support and tons of patience. Ozzymakes things easy forme- he has all themakings of a great horse- tal-
ent, kindness along with a huge heart so that he always willing to try his hard- est even when he might not be feeling his best. Then when he actually gets to work a cow (which does not happen all of the time) it becomes playtime which makes it all themore fun for us both. I remember on themorning of the class he was quite but we kept moving around all of the time. I am not sure if it was to calm his nerves or my own but by the time he stepped into the arena the nerves were gone and we got down to the business at hand. By the time wewalked out I remember being happy with my run but I knew I had left the door open for the other two in the class. After the last horse had finished and their score was an- nounced thatOzzy and I took a collective breath and I realized I had a special run. With the 2011 show season being wrapped up and ribbon on the box being
his Novice Amature Championship, I am looking forward to seeing what 2012 shall bring. Thanks again to RamonaK,Dr. Linda, mymother SueOvermire and mywonderful husband Patrick for supporting thewonderful hobby thatOzzy and I complete in.
