FASHION CLASSICS TRENCH COAT The Classic Wardrobe Staple
Classic, timeless, luxurious, indispens- able... some of the words to describe this fashion must-have! We’ve assembled some of our favorite trench coats for women.
History & Origins of the Trench Coat
First worn by French and British army officers to protect them from the elements, the trench coat was designed during World War I as a a waterproof, knee length rain coat with a removable lining. The design was then modified during the war to include shoulder straps and D-rings. A myth about the D- ring is that it was used to hang a grenade, but in fact was meant for maps and other equipment. During WW II the coat was used on the front lines during battle and thus dubbed ‘the trench coat’ by soldiers.
After the wars, the coat carried a business-like stat- ure because of its military history. It then gained wide spread popularity in movies like Casablanca, and was typically paired with a fedora. There are two companies that claim the original design of the trench coat, Thomas Burberry and Aquascutum.
