Laissez les bon temps rouler!
How do you explain the world’s biggest party to a native Hoosier? For those born in places like New Orleans or Galveston, it’s just a part of life. If you’re a BOI, you probably spent your childhood welcoming February as a time for celebration, parties, parades, and having king cake. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same.
February in Indiana is gloomy and freezing. I spent every February of my childhood huddled next to a fireplace wearing three turtleneck sweaters hoping the next blizzard would not cause another weeklong power outage. I could never imagine that one day, I would live in a place where February temperatures could be in the 70s, and that people would voluntarily stand outside and watch spectacular floats in the midst of the excitement of beads flying through the air amid music, glittering costumes, and a sea of purple, green and gold-attired celebrants. When I moved here twelve years ago, I had an amazing revelation… some people are actually excited when February comes!
Galveston has a lot to be happy about in February. Valentine’s Day is upon us, and Heather Wiederhoeft has some wonderful, romantic destinations for a getaway with your special someone. They’re within a few short hours’ drive from home, which makes it even sweeter. Donna Gable Hatch will introduce you to the winner of the 2012 Mardi Gras Poster Contest. Valentine’s Day is almost synonymous with chocolate, and we have some of the best chocolate makers right here in Galveston at La King’s. Kathleen Maca paid our famous confectionary a visit and if you’ve ever wondered about the person behind those amazing chocolates, read her feature and make a Valentine’s Day stop there for a treat for the one you love.
If you’re a romance novel fan, don’t miss Kathleen’s interview with Heather McAllister, because three of this prolific author’s novels are set in Galveston. And if the one you love best has four legs and a tail, Flori Meeks has spoken to some animal experts on our Island who completely understand why we often call our furry friends “Baby.” It’s the first of our new monthly features on Island pets.
As always, we make sure that each issue contains useful information about our environment and our Island’s history. There is always something more to learn about our coastal paradise, and each month we hope to uncover new mysteries that hide within our historic buildings. Keep reading each month, and we

guarantee you’ll keep learning about this beautiful and historic community we call home.
My Indiana hometown is surely bracing itself
for another freezing February. This month, as the temperatures are already feeling more like spring and Mardi Gras revelry begins to take over the Island, celebrate the joy of living in Galveston all year round.
Thanks for reading, and let the good times roll!
