Whiting understands the value of the natural gas, and in response, built two processing plants in North Dakota. When they began operating the first one south of Stanley several years ago, Brown said they realized it wasn’t big enough. So they expanded it, and soon needed to expand again. The most recent plant near Belfield began operating in late December. It is recovering natural gas liquids like propane and butane to sell for cooking and heating needs. The remaining gas is sold to Montana-Dakota Utilities.

North Dakota currently has 17 natural gas plants within the state operated by various companies. As far as continued

expansion from Whiting, Brown said his company is certainly evaluating other gas plant possibilities, but he remains cautious, as plants present economic and timing challenges.

“We have to decide if there is a significant volume of gas to make it worthwhile to put up a gas plant,” Brown said. “Once you get over that decision, it’s determining how big to make it. Then the equipment can take up to a year to arrive from the time it’s ordered.” As the largest gatherer and processor in the state, Oneok is investing more than $1.7 billion in the next few years to consider additional opportunities to gather and process natural gas. The company strives to coordinate their plant
