Boys & Girls Club’s 25th Anniversary


Charity Auction Planned

its 25th Annual Charity Auction on Saturday, March 10. The silent auction begins at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:15 p.m. The real fun begins at 8:30 p.m. when the live auction kicks off. This silver anniversary celebration is guaranteed to dazzle with an array of new and exciting auction items. “This is a very important night for the Club because the funds raised help support programs that serve more than 2,000 children annually. While parents are worried about making ends meet and keeping their jobs, they can still rely on the Club to ensure their children are in a safe environment and not left alone at home,” says Joanne Flynn, co- chair of the Auction Committee. Some of the unique items slated for the live portion of the auction this year include tickets to the Jay Leno Show, airline tickets for JetBlue, Disney passes, vacations, an ounce of gold, golf and sports outings and fabulous sports memorabilia! There will be a special “Sparkle & Shine” Raffle sponsored by Charles Rage Jewelers of Salem. One hundred patrons have the opportunity to buy a small jewelry box for $50. Each box contains a trinket, but one of the boxes has a piece of jewelry worth nearly $3,000! So, 99 boxes will sparkle but only one will shine! Our silent auction will be full of popular items like restaurant gift certificates, ski passes, birthday parties, sports memorabilia, jewelry, wine and so much more. Since 1967, the Boys & Girls Club of Salem has provided a safe, nurturing environment for young people from Salem and its surrounding communities. “Our kids have a fun place to go every day after school. When they are at the Club, it doesn’t matter if their parents have a job or not. It doesn’t matter if they don’t have a computer. It doesn’t matter if they are not wearing designer clothes. All that matters is that they have a safe place to go with a professional staff that care about them and provide programs that are fun and build good character along the way,” says Denise Dolloff, Special Events Coordinator for the Club. Organizers of the auction are in the process of gathering items.

Education Commissioner, has released dropout data for the 2010-2011 school year, which shows that while the state’s dropout rate has increased slightly, New Hampshire continues to have one of the lowest dropout rates in the nation.

Education, superintendents, school boards and educators across the state remain committed to the goal set by Gov. John Lynch, which is to reduce the dropout rate to zero by the 2012-2013 school year.


“New Hampshire continues to be a national leader in reducing the number of high school dropouts. Thanks to the leadership of Governor


Lynch, and the cooperation and determination of education administrators and teachers across New Hampshire, we are making tremendous progress on reaching the Governor’s goal of zero dropouts by the 2012-2013 school year,” Commissioner Barry said. “The data contained in this report shows the schools continue to make progress in ensuring more of our young people receive their diploma. It also shows our intensive efforts to identify and reach those most at-risk have been successful.” Five high schools, Mascenic, Hinsdale, Pittsburg, Sunapee and the Academy for Science and Design Charter have reported zero dropouts for two consecutive years. In addition, 10 high schools, Colebrook, Gorham, Hopkinton, Lin- wood, Oyster River, Belmont, Windham, Cocheco Arts and Technology Charter Academy and Virtual Learning Academy Charter, have reported zero dropouts for this year. The Department is reporting the annual dropout


rate using the same methodology as in the past, and is reporting for the second year the cohort rate defined by the New England Secondary School Consortium (NESSC) in parallel with national definitions. The annual dropout report continues to break out students into three subgroups: 1) students who receive GEDs; 2) non-graduating students who are enrolled in college either part time or full time; and 3) students who have dropped out. The annual dropout rates include dropouts during the 2010-2011 school year. The NESSC cohort rate requires four years of


student level data. The Department has been collecting student level data since the 2006- 2007 school year. The cohort model includes all students during the past four years who were expected to graduate at the end of the 2010-2011 school year resulting in a more accurate picture of students who were in New Hampshire schools during the past four years. This is the second year that the Department has had sufficient data and reported a cohort rate. For school year 2010-2011, the cohort dropout


rate for students who did not earn a GED and dropped-out of school is 3.30 percent. This is a decline from the 2009-2010 cohort dropout rate of 4.44 percent. The cohort graduation rate also increased from 85.89 percent last year to 86.63 percent this year. “This is clear evidence that our dropout


prevention programs, put in place to complement the increase in the state’s compulsory attendance age are in fact working,” Commissioner Barry said. Review of 2011 Achievements and 2012 Officers Appointed at Annual Meeting


The Windham Endowment for Community Advancement (WECA)


held its Annual Meeting on January 18 at which updates from 2011 activities were made. Highlights from the year included the close out of the WHS Capital Campaign concluding with the installation of the donor plaque, as well as the establishment of WECA Scholarship Fund. The slate of nominees for officer positions was then presented to the Board of Directors by the Nominating Committee. The slate put forth was unanimously accepted by the Board of Directors. The 2012 Officers Elected are: President, Diane Carpenter; Vice President, Tom Barstow; Treasurer, Kelley Gage; and Secretary, Stacey Bruzzese. Other members of the board include: Beverly Donovan, Bob Coole, Bea Martin, Rose-Lynn


Armstrong, Timothy Skwiot, Peter Griffin, Rebecca Howard, Donna Mollica and Travis Blais. The Windham Endowment strives to provide services to local groups and causes, serving as a focal point for fundraising. For donors, the Endowment can provide a way to support a wide range of causes in the town through a single organization. In this way, the Windham Endowment will strengthen relationships among local organizations, donors, and citizens who want to improve the quality of life in our community.
