“Thumbs down to all the media that

in Nov/Dec of last year put out that all was getting better in America while gas prices were reduced and it was ok to go out and spend on Xmas all was well. Now here is, the new year, with all prices including gas up 10% as a whole. How many bought new items such as Large TVs, Computers and such, feeling they could afford with the fuel being lower? The wool has been pulled over your eyes again. Time to wake up.”

“Thumbs down. Do you think that in the last year on the Zoning Board that those people who came before that board seeking relief such as the poor people on Martin Ave would have received any compassion or help from a board that was appointed by the Board of Selectmen? No, they would have been told to deny their petition and throw them out of the home. We, as voters, will decide not the Board of Selectmen.”

“Thumbs down. Wow, to read today that former Selectman Richard Gregory is behind the Campaign to change the Boards back to appointed instead of elected is something. This guy beat a handful of people out of thousands of dollars by filing bankruptcy, putting his home in his wife’s name, so no one could go after their money. We should listen to this con artist.”

“Thumbs down to the totally ‘uninformed’

individual who called teachers ‘stiffs.’ Oh, man, how long has it been since you were in a school? You obviously haven’t spent much time in one. The teachers I know at the elementary level not only have a very structured curriculum, from which they daily instruct their students, they are surrogate parents during the long hours their students are at school. Nobody talks about the students for whom the hours at school are the brightest and safest in a 24-hour period. Teachers and the staff at school provide a safe, loving environment for all the students. Unions have traditionally provided hard-worked-for and hard-won pay scales and benefits. The only dumbing down going on is from your fingertips on the keyboard. Your heart is hardened. If you haven’t already become too scroogey in your life, volunteering in an elementary school might go a long way to opening your eyes to the realities that teachers live every working day.”

“Thumbs down. Just reading your Newspaper

and I want to know if this is true about Rep. Gary Azarian owing the Town of Salem a thirty thousand dollar fine, and if so why is this not being reported in your Newspaper? This guy is one of our elected State Representatives, and also sits on the Salem Zoning Board of Adjustment. This needs to be looked into immediately by Manager Hickey and this fine needs to be collected or heads should roll.”

“Thumbs down/thumbs up to the Craft Beer Chronicles. I’m the guy that Peter wrote about who likes Shock Top and Blue Moon beers. I like the taste and the fact that the beers are reasonable priced. I still like other Craft Beers but these are my favorites. Yes, the breweries that make the beers are foreign owned but the beers are made in the USA. Peter has written about some great places to visit for beer tasting including several local watering holes like The Grill Next Door in Haverhill. Keep up the good writing.”

Community Patriot. I’m sure it’s great fun for the ‘reporter,’ and I use that word very loosely, to run around town covering this and that. But, he should have played it smart before smearing Ms. Baker’s reputation on the say so of a disgruntled former library ‘custodian’ during a public hearing. I think the ‘reporter’ stepped in it big time by printing, word-for-word, the hateful and venomous words that were leveled at Ms. Baker without a shred of proof. The statement must have been written down for the ‘reporter’, because the rest of his article was filled with errors and made no sense. And judging from the article, the ‘reporter’ did not ask the former employee to back up his very public trashing of Ms. Baker with specifics and then made the mess even worse by not asking her for a response. Even if she had given the standard ‘no comment’, it should have been included in his article. Does the former employee know the meaning of the word slander and has the ‘reporter’ ever heard of libel? I only hope both men get up close and personal lessons on ethics real soon.”

“Thumbs down to all the lazy people who defend curb side trash pickup. They do not understand there is a hidden double tax. As I walk my dog along the street, there is a consistent amount of excess trash that accumulates next to the homes that currently get trash pickup. It appears that not 100% of the trash makes it into the garbage truck. This causes the town to utilize added resources to pick up after their mess requiring more taxpayer money. Not to mention mischievous animals and high snow bank problems in the winter that have the potential to cause added spreading of garbage.”

“Thumbs down to another money spinning head spinning idea from the Lords and Ladies who make up our local Nanny state. Surprise! Surprise! The handpicked backroom committee

+ tax

“Thumbs down. I am so sick and tired of reading the negative things that people have to say in this paper. Ronald Giordano has done an outstanding job on the Salem Zoning Board since he was elected. He has great compassion and understanding for peoples needs and showed true leadership as Chairman of that Board. I am deeply sorry to see him go, he would have been an outstanding Selectman should he had run for that seat. The town employees, Police, Fire, Teachers, Town Hall workers and taxpayers had a friend in Ron Giordano he was for everyone, and they all knew it and wanted his help and support.”

“Thumbs down. Newt Gingrich cannot be

trusted. Look at his moral character. ‘Dating Calista for several years’ while married. This is the man running for President? What kind of moral character is that? The first wife had cancer and he divorced her, second wife had MS (not to be under stress), yet Newt was seeing another woman? Please consider who this person is, how he lies and cheats as a husband – how do you trust this unethical man? The man is not trustworthy. Imagine him as a president? It’s bad enough he’s even in politics, everything is true about the morality of this man!! Do not put him in office!!”

“Thumbs up. Please, everyone, vote for Mitt

Romney! I’ve been a Democrat for all my life and now have voted Republican, only because of Romney! He is the most qualified, most intellectual, has a ‘perfect’ agenda ahead for all of us. This is the

meeting put on by the former State Representative, it’s called the right to gamble. It’s very intense, he talked about the people’s rights, and how government has taken over the people. John Manning has the right ideas fighting for the people and their rights. Government you need to do yourself a favor before you leave office, you need to listen to the people. Gambling has been around for years and it is not going away. We need you to support the gambling bill, which will bring revenue to our town and our state and put people to work.

Before you leave office, do the

right thing.” “Thumbs up to Ron Belanger who has been a

town official for years and a state representative. We just want to say thank you to Ron Belanger who has done a lot for our community, and has gone unrecognized for the things he has done. Ron, keep up the good work and thank you again.”

“Thumbs down. I’m asking the people not to

vote for the curbside pick up. Do not be fooled by your selectmen. This would be more expense for you tax-payers. Under your people’s rights, you have the right to pass out your flyers. Do not be fooled by lies. I hope you people vote against this article. We need to save money, not spend money.”

“Thumbs down to the curbside pick up. The so-called totes litter the streets on windy days and the plan to keep the transfer station open on Wednesdays and Fridays will clog

person we need in the White House. Do not listen to the Newt Gingrich rumors! Newt is an idiot. We all know that. Romney is a perfect man, husband, father, friend, and now most democrats (that I know) are fed up with Obama and are voting definitely for Mitt Romney. He’s the man!”

“Thumbs down in response to the thumbs down on Ron Giordano. If it wasn’t for Ron and the others on the Zoning Board my family and I would have been out on the street homeless or in a Shelter. We had a tragedy in our home and it was the Zoning Board that gave us a chance to stay in our home that we so love. Ron and the Zoning Board has helped a lot of people move forward in this town because he understood their situation, had compassion and wanted to help. So don’t say he didn’t make a difference or was a con-man he and the board helped many Thank You.”

“Thumbs down to the hatchet job done to

painted a rosy picture for their anointed ones and for Curb Side Pickup. Well, if it’s such a fine idea, why won’t they let taxpayers who reject their fancy idea opt out? I like self-governance and I like hauling my own trash and recyclables, which costs me zero. If curbside pickup passes you as a taxpayer will not be permitted to haul your own trash to the transfer station! I don’t like the state- sponsored private company radio identifying or chipping my trash either.

fee of $180.00 more for each additional trash barrel ($120 + $60). I don’t like bureaucrats dictating to me to buy something I don’t want or need. If it’s such a great idea, why won’t they let us opt out? Vote ‘no’ for curbside pickup.”

Just A Dollar Grand Opening

“Thumbs down. I went to Market Basket today in the K-Mart Plaza. The music was awful. Loud as can be and people shopping there were disgusted with it. Loud music should not be in a store – it makes people get out fast. My husband came in after I did and he left to go sit in the truck. It needs to be addressed to management. This is unacceptable. Also, Pat was not there (day off I guess) so the young guys were all ‘goofing off’. I felt as though I were shopping in a different store. Pat has good control when she’s there. No more Sunday AM’s for me! Lots of patrons were complaining about the music. One lady left her carriage and walked out. Another guy said he couldn’t concentrate, so he left with 3 items and said he’d go to Shaws.”

“Thumbs down. Last night there was a selectman’s meeting and Pat Hargreaves made a comment that the new hauler, Hardy, will start picking up shingles at the transfer station when the contact is

allotted to him. That’s a bold-faced lie because I’ve been delivering shingles for the last 10 months to the transfer station. That’s just one thing I can give you this evening on the inaccuracies that they’re alleging is going to happen in the community when it goes to total town pick-up.”

I don’t like the increased

“Thumbs up to the water department. My wife slipped on ice and fell down in our driveway. A woman from the water department drove by, saw my request for assistance and promptly helped us. Many thanks and best of luck in the future.”

“Thumbs up to John Manning. I went to a

Shannon Road on those days, especially Saturday. And if you weren’t planning to go to the dump you’ll be stuck anyway, unless

you want to drive on the wrong side of the road or turn back and find another way. This is not a good idea.”

“Thumbs down to William who lashed out at Romney in his recent letter without knowing the facts. He is helping to bring on our Country’s demaise. It’s hypocracy to repeat Romney’s words without know the meaning. Romney fired people who were not effective in their jobs. When he brought in new business, he also gave back lots more. He also stood up to save the Olympic games. You may say he flip-flopped, but also with good reasons, especially if you learn from mistakes. He knows what to do. Obama on the other hand, brought in costly temporary work and at that only replacing a minimal amount of the jobs lost. His ideas failed. He continues to not learn and doesn’t get it. Niether did the man writing that letter. When they realize this, it will be too late.”

“Thumbs up to you the Salem Community

Patriot, you do a great job… but thumbs down to this trash pick-up. The guys who pick it up for the town now, there’s paper all over the place. I’m handicapped and I can’t get my trash out to the street. My trash man goes into my garage and picks it up. I’m sure Tessela won’t do that. Please don’t pass community trash pick-up.”

“Thumbs down to people who once again make the Salem tax-payers think they are getting another great deal with the trash pick-up – just for one minute, look at how great the Comcast deal has worked out with the no choice. They have gone up twice within the last four months! Wouldn’t it be nice to have a second cable company? Don’t be fooled again!”
