Harry Miedema received performance and music education degrees from Indiana University, studying jazz with David Baker. Mr. Miedema has been on the faculty of the University of Indianapolis since 1985. In 2000, he initiated a Jazz Studies degree in the College of Arts and Sciences. He currently teaches saxophone and all jazz courses.


Prior to being named a faculty member at the University of Indianapolis, Mr. Miedema was saxophonist and/or music director for the O’JAYS and Gerald Levert for 23 years. He can be heard on the Four Tops Christmas Album with Aretha Franklin, the O’JAYS album Emotionally Yours (Gold), and Father and Son by Gerald and Eddie Levert (Platinum). Before that, he toured with various Motown acts. He has made appearances on NBC’s Today Show, VH1’s Hard Rock


Live, UPN’s Vibe, Sinbad’s Summer Jam, the Arsenio Hall Show, and the Showtime special The Beach Boys.


Mr. Miedema is the leader of the Bossa Rio Sextet. He is also the first call saxophonist for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Miedema’s radio show, “How Jazz Works”, can be heard on WICR, 88.7 FM, every Saturday evening at 9:00 P.M. His CD, I’ll Never Stop Loving You, was released in 2001. He is a Selmer clinician. Harry currently heads the education committee for the Indy Jazz Foundation.
