Colin Foster (McCutcheon High School, Lafayette) Percussionist Colin Foster is currently a senior at McCutcheon HS.

Wristwatch Time Machine: The piece was composed when Foster was a student at Jefferson HS in Lafayette in the Composing with Digital Tools course. It is a musique concrète work created from recordings of found sounds such as an electric pencil sharpener and a squeaky door.

Gabriel Hawes (Sheridan High School)

Gabriel Hawes is a sophomore attending Sheridan High School in Sheridan, Indiana. He plays horn in his high school band and also in the Indianapolis New World Youth Orchestra. Gabriel began composing music during 8th grade year. For the past 2 years, he has taken music composition lessons with Dr. Frank Felice at Butler University. His goal is to major in Music Composition in college.

Occasions was written during the summer of 2010. I was inspired by the slow pace of the summer days. It was my first string orchestra piece. During this time I was writing a great amount of music, working constantly every day. My writing process for this piece was entirely intuitive and it remains one of my favorite pieces that I have written.

Andrew Shearin (Knox High School)

I first met Andrew Shearin at the 2011 IMEA State Convention at the general session where he was recognized for having won our 2010 Composition Competition for his concert band work, Uncertainty. We could not program the work that weekend, but the Jefferson High School Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Thomas Barker, rehearsed and premiered the piece in March. Drew, joined by members of his family and his music teacher, made the trip to Lafayette for the concert. It was my pleasure to sit up front with him and his sister, where we could be positioned for him to take the stage and address the audience and be recognized for his achievement. I distinctly remember the sense of joy and excitement that he exuded during the concert, captured marvelously in a photo his sister took of him as he listened.

In October, Drew passed away, a young musician just beginning to find his voice as a composer. As I look now at his sister’s photo, I am especially touched by the joy one can see on his face. I suppose as composers we never lose that special sense of wonder at hearing our musical imaginings realized by other musicians. We spend so much time in isolation creating a sound-world, drawing out the possibilities of our musical materials, imaging what it will be outside our own heads, and yet the moment of first hearing is still magical. Drew worked hard and steadily at his composing. A website of his works (www.drewshearinmusic.com) shows the ceaseless activity of a young musical mind sadly silenced just after he finished revising the choral work on this year’s Conference program. While we lament deeply the passing of such a young and creative musician, we take some small solace and joy in being able to present his work. I imagine he’d be pleased knowing that we were hearing his music today and remembering him for it in the days and years to come.
