2011 Composition Competition Winning Works Program Notes James Adams (Clay Middle School, Carmel)

James Adams is currently a freshman attending Carmel High School. He plays the violin in the school’s orchestra. He also plays piano and mandolin. James started composing when he was ten. Last May, his orchestra played Frog Creek for their Spring Concert. He hopes to go to Indiana University and major in music.

Frog Creek was composed in 2010 for the Clay Middle School Eighth Grade Orchestra. The piece is named after a small statue of two frogs sitting in a leaf boat made to look like they are rowing down a river. It was written to convey an upbeat and cheerful ambiance.

Eesha Bemra (Woodside Middle School, Ft. Wayne)

Eesha Bemra began Indian Hindustani Classical singing lessons at age five. Two years later, she began learning piano, guitar and studying music theory and composition. Eesha’s awards and honors include winning the Fremont Unified School District’s Young Composer Contest for three consecutive years and first prize for a film- scoring contest conducted by the Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC). Eesha has been studying with the Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory – The Achievement Program (formerly the National Music Certificate Program) for the past six years, which has awarded her multiple California State Awards of Excellence: three for piano and five for voice. She was also awarded with the Ohio State Award of Excellence for voice. Eesha studies theory and composition with Dr. Ken Johnson, piano with Christine Freeman, and voice with Robert Nance. She is currently a freshman at Homestead High School in the Southwest Allen County School District. In the future, she hopes to pursue a career in music or science.

The text of Song of the Angels was originally written as a simple poem a few years ago, but after some time it was arranged into a lyrical song. The music was composed with the archetypal image of angels in mind – winged cherubs in the sky, holding harps and simply watching the mere mortals on Earth from above. The piece was first scored for string quartet, harp, and solo voice, but was later expanded to include three vocal parts in order to add richness to the musical selection as a whole.

Kaleb Eberhart (Jefferson High School, Lafayette)

Kaleb Eberhart is a junior attending Jefferson High School in Lafayette. He is a clarinetist studying with Beth Purkheiser, performs in the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble at school, studies music theory and began studying composition this year with Dr. Judd Danby. He hopes to attend Ball State University to study music composition.

Feelings of Belonging began about a year ago as a solo piano work, but I soon realized that the addition of the string quartet would allow for more variety of “flavors”. Nobuo Uematsu is one of my favorite composers of video-game music and I was inspired by a work from the video game Final Fantasy 13 titled Sunleth Waterscape/ The Promise, scored for piano and strings. I was trying to evoke through music, the feelings you get when you are with people who are special, close and important to you. Working on this piece has gotten me interested in listening to a lot more music by composers like Brahms and Beethoven.
