Venue Profile You’re The Swan that I Want!

First of all I’d like to apologise about the terrible pun in the headline. I just couldn’t resist. Anyway, today we’re going to wax lyrical about The Swan in Wantage, which has a built up quite a reputation for good music over the past two years.

Craig Gradwell, who runs The Swan in Wantage, is one of the nicest blokes you’re ever likely to meet. You can tell that he’s passionate about music. He

genuinely gets excited when he’s talking about new bands he’s discovered. It is this passion that he instils into The Swan. This is why the venue has become ground zero for

the area’s music scene. He holds regular jam nights, has original band nights every Friday with some of the best bands from across the region taking part and always has a cracking covers band on the Saturday. On Sunday January 22 the venue even held an open mic competition to win time at Challow Park Studio. The joint winners were Jenny Bracey and "Jane Likes Books" and third place went to Andy Robbins and Jonothan Hawes. Prizes were provided by Challow Park Studios and Chris Ayres. They’ve had some great bands playing from

Oxford bands like The Empty Vessels, Invisible Vegas, The Black Hats, Spring Offensive and Colour Change for Camoflague. He’s also been delving quite heavily into the

Swindon music scene with bands like The Colorados, The Racket and Nudy Bronque all rocking up to The Swan.

He said: “I love new music. I love that feeling when

you discover something new, something that genuinely suprises you. Recently there was a Swindon band called Super Squarecloud who I was blown away by. I’ve got them playing this month.” Super Squarecloud will be playing on February 10 alongside The Fixed. But that’s not all they’ve got as February is set to be a blinder of a month at The Swan. On Feb 3 there’s Below The Fall and Firestate. On Feb 17 there’s The Street Orphans and The Kaos and on Wednesday Feb 29 they’ve got Nudybronque and Falling with Style. You can find The Swan on Facebook if you need more info.
