If you’re looking to update your stairs and hallway, carpet runners are having a fashion revival and can offer a stylish, cost-effective solution. Co- ordinating a runner with your existing interior style is easy because there are now so many design options to choose from. “Stairs and hallways
receive a heavy footfall, so it’s important to choose a runner that can cope with lots of daily wear and tear, such as a wool and nylon blend,” says Kelly Butler, Design Studio Manager at Brintons. “Stair runners are brilliant for creating the illusion of more space in the same way that a painting or mirror can alter the perception of a room.” To measure the amount of

carpet needed for a runner, simply measure the tread (depth) and riser (height) of one step and multiply that by the number of stairs you have. Stair rods can be used as a decorative touch but they aren’t essential – runners are fixed with grippers in the same way as carpet. For extra security, though, it’s worth also asking your carpet fitter to use a strong adhesive. Even wood flooring – whether you choose the real thing or opt for cheaper engineered wood or even laminates – is getting some clever new twists.
