What each of them is describing are the typical symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.


A What is


carpal tunnel syndrome?


Carpal tunnel syndrome is a very common condition caused by one of the important nerves of the hand, the median nerve, being squeezed as it passes under a tunnel in the wrist. The cause is usually unknown but it can be associated with diabetes, an underactive thyroid, arthritis or even fl uid retention during pregnancy. When the problem is severe or ignored for too long the nerve can be permanently

damaged and the use of your hand can be impaired. It is therefore important to get your hand properly assessed by a Hand Specialist. A detailed examination usually reveals that the pins and needles or numbness affects the thumb, index, middle and half the ring fi nger.


Mild symptoms can be


treated by a simple cortisone injection, taking ibuprofen and the use of a wrist splint at night. If the symptoms are severe or unremitting despite simple measures then a simple operation under local anaesthetic, performed by an experienced Hand Surgeon, usually successfully resolves the problem for good.
