MEMBERSHIP MATTERS! by Penny Duermeyer, Chair, CHA Membership Committee

…Because without financial support, without volunteers, without the expertise of community leaders, without people willing to be involved, a perfectly good organization cannot be effective.

This year, the CHA is “getting serious” about increasing membership. Let me introduce our Mighty Membership Committee: Ann Boyd, Mary Ann Chapple, Laura Crenshaw, Pam Crooks, Patricia Dabbar, Donna Dixon, Penny Duermeyer, Sally Finch, Pat Flynn, Susan Keith, Katie Moore, Caroline Murray, Holly Nappen, Carol Raiter, Ky Roberts, Becci Rocco, Phyl Sarber, Barbara Schmelzer, Doug St. Denis, Ilene Swartz, Emily Talbert, Sandra Tredwell and Kathie Woiwode.

If you would like to join our committee ( and who wouldn’t want to join a committee that starts with “Mighty”) please call me, Penny Duermeyer at 435-4552 or email penny92118@ sbcglobal.net. We believe in “strength in numbers,” so friends can find friends and tell them about CHA. We meet once a month on the third Monday of each month and our membership drive continues through October 2011… AND we’re having a lot of fun.

SALUTING CHA VOLUNTEERS:

“We couldn’t do it without you!” By Katherine Matlack, Visitor Center Manager

“We couldn’t do it without you!” Now there’s a statement that verges on the trite, but with good cause. We find ourselves saying it all the time, because without our corps of dedicated volunteers, we would not be able to successfully manage the daily duties and projects of the Coronado Historical Association.

During February, CHA’s volunteers provided a vast amount of critical and irreplaceable labor as we participated in the kick-off events for the Centennial of Naval Aviation. The huge Open House at North Island Naval Air Station on February 12, required hundreds of hours of work. Our volunteers folded, assembled, schlepped, biked, guided, instructed, reassured, endured, set up, took down, cleaned up and stuffed.

Despite all the work, it was a wonderful time on a glorious day.

Just think….

With all the dedicated members of Rotary International, Polio has been almost eradicated (99%) from our planet.

With the Hospital Foundation partnering with the City, we have a treasured Community Hospital.

With support for COSA, we have a nationally recognized School of The Arts. With Main Street, we have beautiful median gardens.

With the Floral Association, we have had 86 nationally recognized Flower Shows! AND WITH THE CORONADO HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION

We have state-of-the-art archives preserving our precious history of photographs, documents, newspapers, textiles and artifacts.

We have every third grader in Coronado learning about Coronado History and why it matters.

We have exhibits and lectures, historic walking tours and Art Walks. And then we have a Ball in January! Aren’t you proud to be a member?

Volunteers at the Visitor Center Desk have been tireless in answering questions and giving directions to the scores of naval aviation yard-sign-seekers, who have come to our offices for their signs, applications, maps and information. Their front-line assistance on this popular project provided enormous help to the office staff.

The extraordinary help we received from our volunteers during the centennial celebration was, of course, in addition to the daily contributions they make assisting Coronado visitors and residents, enriching their visit here with CHA’s docent-led historic tours, researching and writing for the archives and pitching in whenever they receive a last-minute cry for help. Virtually every day of the year, volunteers are vital to the operation of the Visitor Center and the CHA.

During Volunteer Appreciation Month in April, we thank our outstanding group of giving, friendly, interested and interesting people who dedicate their days, weeks, months and years to Coronado’s beauty and history. We absolutely couldn’t do it without them. We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds 619.437.8788, or at vcmgr@ coronadovisitorcenter.com.
