The Dixons moved to Coronado from Rancho Santa Fe five years ago. Certainly their daughter, Anne, and her children who live on I Avenue had something to do with it. But they also love the history of the island and the feeling it evokes of an earlier time in California. They were walking with their granddaughter in a stroller when they saw the property where they now live. They fell in love with the bay front location at first sight.

Dr. & Mrs. Howard Dixon, owners/founders of Coronado Pediatric Dentistry are the premier sponsors of the 2011 Coronado Historic Home Tour.

SPOTLIGHT ON

CORONADO PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

By Pam Crooks

Howard and Donna Dixon love children. You can tell by the twinkle in Dr. Dixon’s eyes when he describes his tiny dental patients, or gaze at the beautiful photos of their five children and nine grandchildren, displayed near the entrance to their Coronado home on First Street.

PRESERVATION MONTH CELEBRATED WITH SPECIAL CHA LECTURE

For the National Trust of Preservation’s annual Preservation Month, the Coronado Historical Association has invited the State Historic Preservation Officer Wayne Donaldson to speak on “Coronado and Historic Preservation in the Next Decade.“ This lecture has been generously supported by donors in honor of the late Nancye Splinter, who was active in the historical preservation of Coronado and a former member of the CHA Board of Directors. Mr. Donaldson’s presentation will be given on Friday, May 20, at 7 p.m., in the Lecture Hall of the Coronado Museum of History and Art.

Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA, LEED AP is the California State Historic Preservation Officer. Before his appointment in 2004 by Governor Schwarzenegger, he had a successful award-winning 26-year practice as a preservation architect in California, Arizona and Nevada. In May 2010, President Barack Obama selected him to serve a four-year term as the next chair of the Advisory

The Dixons are very proud to have introduced the first pediatric dental practice to the island. They’ve run a similar practice in San Diego for 41 years (18 years in Clairemont, 23 years in Sorrento Mesa). Dentistry is a family affair for them. Three of the five Dixon offspring have become dentists--one daughter and two of their sons. Donna is a dental hygienist who works part time with their son, Ross, in his Sorrento Mesa office.

According to Dr. Dixon, pediatric dentists are focused on childhood dental development much like a pediatrician is with your child’s physical development. He likes to see kids as young as one year (which the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics agree is the best time to take a child for a first exam).

Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA, LEED AP is the California State Historic Preservation Officer.

Council on Historic Preservation. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, Master of Science from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland and received his Masters in Public History and Teaching from the University of San Diego.
