Girl power!
The semi-nomadic Maasai people of Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania have remained distinct in their dress, customs and way of life over many decades. Tragically, one such custom that they cling to is forced marriage. Girls as young as 11 are given away in marriage against their will, in exchange for a dowry. The husbands can be in their fifties or older, often with several wives already.
Add to this the brutal ‘initiation’ ceremony of female circumcision and the end of their education and aspirations. All in all this is a fate that no young girl should have to face. You will be building them a safe haven; a chance to become free, educated women.
What you will be doing You will be building the centre in the Narok area, about 100km west of Nairobi. It will feature a dormitory for the girls, and four classrooms, The matrons’ accommodation and first bedroom will be built in 2011 along with full electricity and plumbing. The land has been purchased, and Mission Direct will be continuing to work there in 2012.
You will get to see a number of other social projects based among the Maasai people during your stay. There will also be the chance to unwind on the last full day with a planned safari trip in the Masai Mara region.
The project
The MEA was founded by Maasai Pastor David Ole Kereto 15 years ago. It offers spiritual, mental, social and physical care for the poorest and most marginalised Maasai groups.
The Maasai Rescue Centre will offer refuge, education and empowerment for young women who have fled their families, refusing forced marriage. It will also be used to disseminate information about the harmful health effects of female circumcision and to implement alternative rites of passage for girls coming of age.
