The Samaritan Foundation villages A short detour from the ‘tourist strip’ of the DR reveals shocking poverty. Thousands of families live in shacks made from garbage. Many of them have come from Haiti in search of a better life and are now trapped in poverty.

The Samaritan Foundation has so far built over 1,000 low cost homes for these people. These come with water and sanitation. Residents have access to medical help, education and vocational training. These are true communities offering families a fresh start.

Taste the difference

Charities always promise that your time and money will ‘make a huge difference.’ In The Dominican Republic, you can experience that difference in person.

You will see and hear for yourself what life is like in the shanty villages, handle building blocks and window frames that will become a new home for one of these families and smell the lush Caribbean air while you work. Finally, expect to taste some tears as you help a grateful family move in.

What you will be doing During your fortnight’s stay you will help with the building work on one or more of these homes. At the end of your stay you will see one completed. Then you will help to move a family out of their squalid shack and hand them the keys to their new home.

You will also get to help out with a number of other community projects, including local schools, a visit to a local hospital and the chance to take part in a feeding programme.
