Out of the margins
Between the heart of Phnom Penh and the badly polluted Mekong River there are many thousands who literally ‘live on the margins’: on a strip of land rife with disease and terrible poverty. There are no opportunities for education, work or a better life.
Some of the Christians in Phnom Penh have made it their vocation to rescue these families from the margins. So if you believe that no child should be forced to play by a chemical effluent stream, then come and join this work.
The project Previously, the Fellowship of Hope has worked with Mission Direct to re-house a number of Phnom Penh’s poorest families in a whole new village on land donated to them. In 2011 we built a centre for the region’s many hundreds of HIV positive slum children.
Again in 2012 you will be serving these ‘people of the margins’ – helping with basic construction and decoration tasks. You don’t need to be a skilled craftsman; just come ready to serve others.
Gestures of love
A highlight for volunteer teams in 2011 was washing children’s hair in a slum village – a simple but moving gesture. There will be many similar opportunities in 2012: including visits to several other social and health education projects run by the church. You will also visit a slum village made of recycled tin and wood, taking clothes for each family and playing games with the children.
