Putting the invisible people on the map
There are two sides to Zambia’s capital Lusaka; one half of the city was planned and built with at least some basic infrastructure and amenities. But there is the other side: people have settled on land left empty around the city. They have formed shanty towns - these are communities with no schools, clinics, water or sanitation. They have settled uninvited and are all but ignored.
Nobody deserves to be invisible. Come and build some basic amenities for these people. You can help to put a whole town on the map.
The project
Up to 2011 Mission Direct has focussed on building schools for some of Lusaka’s shanty towns. So far we have completed two whole schools and several more classrooms for existing ones. We will continue to serve these same shanty towns in 2012 by building further crucial amenities.
Trip dates
Doing it for the kids There are opportunities to take part in a wide range of hands-on programmes to help street kids, who are the by- product of poverty and HIV/AIDS. You will go with the Fountain of Hope project to take food and clothes to boys and girls who live on the streets. You can turn your hand to teaching, or just play with the children.
Either way be prepared to be ‘mobbed’ by dozens of kids hungry for love and affection.
