www.missiondirect.org/moldova The Project:
salt and light for Gotesti With the help of Mission Direct, Gotesti’s Christians have embarked on a series of building and renovation projects for some of the poorest and most vulnerable people. Just as crucially they are working to build facilities for the whole village to make use of: youth work, a drop in centre and much more. This work is already paying dividends, the Church are being treated with a new respect, as is their message.
Putting heart back into the community
Like many parts of the former Soviet Union, Moldova faces serious poverty – comparable to many African nations. But there is another kind of poverty that they face: although Moldovans are very hospitable, years of communism have destroyed much of their community spirit.
The church in Gotesti wants to rebuild a spirit of care and cooperation in their home town. They are doing it with a community centre, along with other church education and welfare projects. Decades of communism have left the church on the margins – viewed as an irrelevant sect. But Gotesti’s Christians are ready to place themselves at the heart of their community. This is your chance to help them.

What you will be doing You will roll up your sleeves and help with some of the current building and renovation projects. It could be making a widow’s grass-thatched home habitable, or renovating a community centre. Whatever you do, you will play a precious role in building bridges between the church and the community. You will also be participating in vital feeding, welfare and education programmes for some of the poorest families and helping at a childrens holiday club.
Europe, but a world apart During your time off you can see the many different sides of Moldova. You will have a chance to visit the capital Chişinau with its Soviet architecture and impressive war memorials. Don’t be fooled by Moldova’s location as part of Europe; this is a truly cross- cultural experience!
