weight increases our risk of diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, dementia and cancers— especially prostate and colon cancer in men, and breast, uterine and ovarian in women. The more fat in our body, the faster we age, and the more cognitive decline we face—in other words, we face difficulty with memory and long term higher risk of dementia. Abdominal

obesity is particularly

dangerous, and men with big bellies have a much higher risk of sudden death and age faster than men without the abdominal weight. The easiest way to assess obesity is by waist circumference: in men, greater or equal to 40 inches, or in women 35 inches, correlates with metabolic syndrome and increased risk of death. Pediatric obesity is also increasing rapidly,

with age of onset of obesity correlating with adult risk of obesity. Younger than 3 years is a 10 percent risk of remaining obese as an adult; ages 3-10 years is a 33 percent risk; and ages15-17 years, is an 80 percent risk. Type 2 Diabetes is now affecting even children because of weight, and we must address this problem seriously and be alert for eating disorders. Why this epidemic of weight and

obesity? There are many reasons besides simply eating more and exercising less; it is so much more complicated than that. Weight loss is a multifactorial problem and includes the following: Food Allergies: Sixty percent of the U.S.

suffers from undetected food allergies, and people often crave foods they’re allergic to. The most common allergies are to wheat, dairy, soy and chocolate. Weight gain may be due to allergies to food or food intolerances, as these foods cause fluid retention and affect brain neurotransmitter function to make us eat more. This can also lead to leaky gut syndrome, and recent studies suggest leaky gut increases risk of fatty liver, the most common liver disease we see now, due to abdominal fat cells infiltrating the liver. Symptoms of food allergies can be delayed up to 72 hours and can only reliably be tested with a comprehensive blood test. Hormones: The most important

hormone that keeps us from losing weight is insulin. Insulin resistance and high levels of insulin make it very difficult to effectively lose any weight. Insulin must
