Spokane Symphony Classics – Te Spokane Symphony is, to put it bluntly, a far beter or- chestra than a city of our size has any right to expect. If you feel inclined to test this theory, I direct you toward the two Classics series con- certs coming up on the schedule. The first is titled Heroes and Legends,

January 28-29, and features pianist Martina Filjak playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor. She’s a young and exceptionally talented pianist who grew up in Croatia and now tours worldwide. This concert will also feature two of the great orchestral staples, Rossini’s William Tell Overture (aka the Lone Ranger theme), and Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 3 Eroica. The second concert is titled Brilliance and

Virtuosity, February 11-12, and it will feature the symphony’s own virtuoso concertmaster, Mateusz Wolski, playing Erich Korngold’s Violin Concerto. The other showpiece of the evening will be Stravinsky’s brilliant and groundbreaking Petrushka. January 28-29 and February 11-12, Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox, (509) 624-1200 or through TicketsWest.

Wilco – We don’t know whether to call it alt- rock, Americana, alt-country, alt-folk or even (sometimes) eerie electronic noise, but some of us believe that this Jeff Tweedy-fronted band is one of the finest bands working today. We’re counting ourselves lucky to have them back at the INB – the last time was in 2008. February 6, INB Performing Arts Center, tickets through TicketsWest.

Brad Paisley – It’s hard to find a bigger – or more deserving – country superstar than Brad Paisley. His songs are funny, clever, intelligent and irresistibly catchy. And he can hold his own trading repartee with Jon Stewart on Te Daily Show. Tis show may sell out the Arena. February 6, INB Performing Arts Center, tickets through TicketsWest.

Soul Salvation with Ruthie Foster and Paul Thorn – Tey don’t have Brad Paisley-like name recognition, but this is my choice for the sleeper hit of the winter. I’ll never forget watch- ing Ruthie Foster at the Festival at Sandpoint a few years back, and realizing I was in the pres- ence of a stunning, once-in-a-generation folk- soul talent. February 3, Bing Crosby Teater, tick- ets through TicketsWest.
