Did you know that one in three dogs are diagnosed with cancer during their life? And that half of those dogs will die from cancer? In fact, cancer is the leading non- accidental cause of death in dogs, and it’s on the rise.

I learned these statistics the hard way when my first dog, Lance, was diagnosed with lymphoma. It began one day when I noticed that the lymph nodes under Lance’s jaw were swollen. Two days before Christmas, I took him to the vet and was shocked to hear that he may have cancer! It was difficult to imagine, as he exhibited no other symptoms. However, two days after Christmas, a trip to the oncologist confirmed the diagnosis of lymphoma. Untreated, Lance’s life expectancy was four to six weeks. With treatment, he had a 40-45 percent

chance of living one year and less than a 20 percent chance of surviving two years. Lance was my heart and soul dog. Needless to say it wasn’t a very merry holiday.

Together, Lance and I fought the good fight. Lymphoma is typically treated with chemotherapy, and greater than 75 percent of dogs treated are able to achieve remission. Lance tolerated the initial “heavy duty” rounds of chemotherapy with relatively few side effects and went into remission. The average duration of a first lymphoma remission is 6 to 11 months; Lance made it 10. The second remission is more difficult
