PRELUDE
2012 BEGINS ON A STRONG NOTE FOR TPi
After some readjusting in the summer of 2011, a steep learning curve and a few tradeshows later has resulted in a close-knit editorial situation at TPi HQ. Zoe and I will be alternating across this page each month with tales from our travels, where hopefully we’ll get to meet and interview most of you en route. Before joining TPi, I worked as a music reporter for the national press. The change
in direction has been challenging and rewarding. After all, it’s not rocket science, it’s pro audio, lighting and video. Often louder, brighter and more innovative. For those who embraced change and development the way we had to, thank you.
And for those of you who instilled any kind of industry education upon us, it’s been interesting and much appreciated. Especially if any kind of said wise conversation was over an espresso at an airport lounge as I came to the terrifying realisation that champagne and new grown-up lady shoes could actually be the downfall of a girl who grew up on hardcore punk.
I’m looking at you, Frankfurt. It wasn’t, of course, and a passion for live
music and all it entails have driven some great experiences since. The Liberty Parade in Romania where I witnessed an outdoor arena constructed on the beach in 40o
C heat last July and being able
to see cover star Rihanna break box office records time and time again last year, to name a few. Our aim for 2012 is to cover more European
and international stories, from all kinds of gigs to theatre shows, festivals and tradeshows, to spend more time getting to know the people behind the productions and to connect with our readership on both an accurate and entertaining level. In this issue we report on genre defining metalers Motörhead in Germany while investigating just how the Chemical Brothers’ sound kept Malta dancing. First to hit the show floor on our calendar is NAMM in California, followed by ISE in Amsterdam where Mondiale Publishing’s Dynamic Events conference will take place on Monday, 30 January. I look forward to seeing you there. As you all know, the TPi Awards is fast approaching and it’ll be a first for both Zoe
and I to meet a lot of you face to face. If we’ve already done so, you’ll know that’s a vodka and a whiskey respectively. But less of the party talk just now, as the clock is already ticking on our February issue.
So I wish you a happy and healthy 2012 and look forward to working and conversing with you as the tours roll on and the edit rolls out.
