They then voted for their favorite book. The votes were tallied and sent to the Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library. The book receiving the most votes, Memoirs of a Goldfish, was named as the winner of the

School News North Salem

submitted by North Salem School The year 2011 ended on a good note at North Salem, literally. The 5th Grade Band gave a spectacular holiday performance in the new North Salem gymnasium. Parents, relatives, friends and the entire school were invited to hear a variety of Holiday songs and some old favorites. Some students also performed duets! Great work to all band members and a big thank you to Ms. McDonough for all her time spend teaching the students who have made tremendous progress in only a few short months. If you love good Italian food, then you

won’t want to miss this year’s Pasta Palooza event at North Salem on Friday, January 27, at 6 p.m.! Food is being provided by The Chateau Restaurant and will feature Chateau’s pasta, meatballs and Italian bread, salad from T-Bones and of course homemade desserts courtesy of our fifth grade parents! fifth grade students will be working with reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs and atlases to further their ability to find information. First and second graders will be learning the differences between fiction and non-fiction books. The annual Book Fair will be held during the week of February 6-10. Watch

The cold winter vacation week is an excellent opportunity for you and parents and students to curl up and read a few good books purchased from the book fair. Keep in mind that the library does receive a percentage of profits, which in turn provide more reading opportunities here at Barron school.

say that numerous students participated in this year’s Geography Bee. Congratulations to Allison Ross, first place winner and Ben Laycock the runner up. Both students answered very difficult questions during the competition. Allison will now take a test that students up to the eighth grade will also take to see if she qualifies to represent New Hampshire on a national level. Good luck Allison!

We’re ready.

We’re PSNH and we’re ready with years of experience and ongoing training on how to prepare for and respond to a winter storm. You can be ready, too, by following a few simple tips on psnh.com/stormsafety and by following PSNH on Twitter and Facebook.

All students have been learning a tremendous amount about plants. Did you know that a seed contains its own food for a plant to begin growing? Give it water and sunlight and watch the magic happen. Are you aware that Columbus was not the first explorer to discover America? Students have been learning about the first inhabitants, the Native Americans. Students wonder what it was like for them to see

early explorers dressed in strange clothing, sailing in their huge vessels, having such pale skin. They must have looked like they were from another planet. Students also learned that most explorers were searching for riches, and many tried to circumnavigate the world and many died on these quests. In Math students have measured angles, analyzed shapes, and can create a congruent triangle using a compass and straight edge. Wow! Throughout the year students have read many genres. Some students read adventure books and are currently writing their own adventure. They will certainly be action packed. Barron’s fifth grade students are extremely

creative. In Art class they created animals out of recycled items, learned necessary skills to play sports, and band and chorus members performed for their peers and families. They were fabulous. Their latest undertaking has been ballroom dancing. Many were a little nervous, but now they look forward to this new adventure. Maybe we have some future “Dancing With The Stars” amongst us.

It has been fun so far and students as well as Barorn staff look forward to seeing what happens in this new year.
