Mark Penner will help celebrate Lyric’s 100 years

Local songwriters were offered the chance to express themselves through a professionally-recorded song for the Lyric Theatre’s 100th Anniversary Compilation CD,which will be released Jan. 28. Following a contest looking for both songs and


art created to celebrate the Lyric Theatre, the community of Swift Current, and the southwest region, 12 songs were selected to be included on the album,which will be used as a fundraising tool for the theatre.


Money raised will be used to aid the Southwest Cultural Development Group in restoring the theatre, as well as to help bring in more talent to perform at the venue. Local singer/songwriter Mark Penner recently

returned to his farm on the prairies after spending several years living in Vancouver. “I have a farm south of Herbert, and I was tired of the big city and the rat race. I wanted to come back and take care of things here,” he explained. Penner had been involved with the Vancouver music scene, and wasn’t sure what would be going on in the local art community in Swift Current. He was pleased to see the Lyric Theatre was being


revitalized, and he decided to get involved. “It’s so good to see more artists coming though Swift Current,” Penner noted. “It’s good for the community and it’s good for the artists, giving them another stop along the road.” Music has always been an interest for Penner,whose


father played guitar and harmonica. Penner was captivated by the sounds of the instruments, and was intrigued enough to get into music himself. He started writing his own songs at around 19 or 20


years old, and hasn’t stopped since. The song he entered in the Lyric’s contest All for a Dream, was actually written a few years ago. “It just really suited the whole theme and idea of the contest,” he explained. “It’s about pursuing dreams, and that’s what going on with the Lyric. There are so many volunteers involved trying to make a venue like that, it really takes a lot of work and dedication.” It was also important to Penner to be a part of the


anniversary celebration, since he is so thrilled to see the theatre thriving within a smaller community like Swift Current. “It’s a bit harder to keep something like that going in a smaller community, and there’s already so much going on with sports and recreation,” he said. “But it’s really buzzing, creating interest for young people who are getting involved and interested in music and songwriting. That’s so good to see.”


Swift Current woman is $10,000 richer


CONTRIBUTED From surprise to tears, Rose Baskerville was a


rollercoaster of emotions when she discovered she’d won $10,000 playing the scratch n’ win game TETRIS. Baskerville purchased some $4 TETRIS tickets at Shoppers Drug Mart, located on Central Avenue in Swift Current. The first ticket she scratched was the big winner. “I scratched it and couldn’t believe what I


uncovered,” recalled Baskerville when she saw the $10,000 prize.


“My first thought was, ‘Let’s get back to Shoppers!’” She returned to the store and had the win confirmed — Rose had indeed won the game’s second highest prize. “I started to cry. I couldn’t believe it.” Baskerville plans to use her winnings to pay off some debts and do some home repairs.
