Reviewing many impressive projects from around the globe to determine the achievement of outstanding lighting design was a collaborative and very inspiring process to be a part of. The dynamic lighting projects we reviewed were unique yet consistent, with thoughtful and sophisticated design integration. The lighting considerations demonstrated were not to distract but allowed the environment to shine! The talented group of lighting design
winners deserves much recognition. Architectural lighting design professionals
recognize and continue to focus on the responsibility and sensitivity to our environment and the future. Those that lead with a creative approach to design by integrating lighting solutions with the architectural environment while blending energy efficiency and sustainability are those who will create timeless and insightful designs – that’s always the trend!

As the architect on the jury, I was drawn to the projects that elevated the architect’s design concept to a higher level. The winners not only achieved this goal but created spaces that are memorable and inspiring. I was impressed by the way in which the winning projects all dealt with very different design challenges. The scale, style and technique are different for each one of these projects, but they all manage to create an atmosphere that complements the architecture and introduces new life into the projects.
I believe that the range in styles displayed by the winners shows that design doesn’t need to follow a trend, but should be responsive to the needs of each particular project. Lighting design, like architecture, has entered a new age in which we can no longer be wasteful with energy and materials. I believe that as we move forward, great design will be judged not only by its aesthetic beauty but also by its creative use of natural resources.

The winners this year should be heralded as inventive and inspired practitioners. Not only were the designs thought-provoking, but they were revealing of successful collaborations between design team members. Rigorous conceptual development and technical prowess enables exquisite results. Winning projects were unique and diverse, showing skillful lighting design work with both big and small budges, proving that engaging
design transcends cost borders. Upcoming projects are likely to engage technology even further. From energy-smart lighting products to sophisticated control systems, designers are likely to keep sustainability targets in mind. Notwithstanding energy constraints, lighting designs are likely to be visually strong, spatially complementary and in support of human experience.

I was very impressed by the amount of high-quality submissions this year. There is no doubt that the quantity of highly talented lighting designers has grown over the years, and as a profession, architec- tural lighting design has come a long way. The diver- sity of submissions was very refreshing as well. Submissions included whimsical, kinetic, sculptural, colorful and minimalistic lighting designs; each enhanced the overall architecture and design ele- ments of their specific projects and contributed to their success.

The submissions were peppered with new technology showing knowledge and interest
in
efficiency and sustainability. Many used the latest LED technology that seems to be the wave of the future. Although LED lighting still has a long way to go before being widely accepted and specified by lighting designers, it seems to be on a growth spurt that is moving in the right direction. Lighting designers still need to be very selective and cautious with LED specifications, but recent developments are very encouraging.
