Lighting has the power to be

energy-saving

Congratulations to the winners of the 28th IALD International Lighting Design Awards on their outstanding achievements.

We also applaud all of the IALD members on their continued passion for balancing energy conservation and the quality of light.

The East Harlem School operates on a limited budget and maximizes value derived from every element of the program, including lighting. The visually permeable façade moderates daylighting to the building’s interior, and at night it expresses the interior life to the street. “The excitement of this project is in how well

the design team composed the overall lighting story, and how efficiently they spent their resources,” commented on judge on the project. “The quality of the lighted environment is playful and shows an inspired and well executed design.” Cost-effective but dramatic suspended fluorescent pendants add character to the space,

while contextualizing basic downlights with circular faces. With the exception of a handful of halogens in key locations, the scheme utilizes fluorescents with a small number of metal halide luminaires. All lighting, interior or exterior, is accessible for maintenance from step ladders or small on site access equipment.
