Περί προβολής
Η δηµοσιότητα που πήρε ο αγώνας τοπικά ήταν απίστευτη. Όπως κάνουν πάντα, έφερναν τα σχολεία επίσκεψη και παρακινούσαν τον κόσµο να περάσει να επισκεφτεί το «χωριό», ακόµα και µε περίπτερα µε τοπικά προϊόντα. Στόχος τους είναι το Άµπου Ντάµπι εκτός από τουριστικός προορισµός να γίνει και ιστιοπλοϊκός προορισµός.
Pro-Am Race
Τελικά, ενώ νόµιζα ότι η ιστιοδροµία θα ήταν µία εκδροµή, κάθε άλλο παρά εκδροµή ήταν. Από το πρωί µας προετοίµαζαν και τελικά ανεβήκαµε µόνο δηµοσιογράφοι ιστιοπλοΐας που αν µη τι άλλο γνωρίζαµε τα βασικά. ∆εν κάναµε φωτογραφίσεις, αλλά κάναµε διάφορες θέσεις κανονικής δουλειάς και φυσικά και λίγο τιµόνι να νιώσουµε το σκάφος. Υπάρχουν άραγε λόγια να περιγράψουν την αίσθηση στο τιµόνι ενός VO70 που ταξιδεύει full-power; Μάλλον η φαντασία είναι καλύτερη από το κείµενο. Τα σκάφη είναι πολύ πιο προηγµένα τεχνολογικά σε σχέση µε τα προηγούµενα, αλλά είναι και πολύ πιο εργονοµικά και φιλόξενα κάτω. Πλέον κινείσαι άνετα. Θυµάµαι την πρώτη γενιά που η πρώτη µου σκέψη ήταν «∆εν θα ήθελα να κατεβαίνω εκεί κάτω». Στη δεύτερη γενιά η σκέψη έγινε «θα κατέβαινα µόνο αν µε πληρώνανε» και τώρα το σκάφη είναι πιο ευχάριστα από το µέσο αγωνιστικό σκάφος.
Pablicity
The race received unbelievable publicity in the area. As always, schools would pay visits and people were encouraged to come and visit the “village”, or at least go round the stands with the local products. Their goal is to make Abu Dabhi not only a tourist destination but a sailing destination too.
Pro-Am Race
At the end of the day, even though I thought the race would be plain sailing, it was nothing like that. Our preparation started in the morning and, eventually, only sailing journalists were allowed on board the racers since, after all, at least we knew the basics. No shootings were allowed but we carried out several tasks on board and, of course, got a hold of the steering wheel to get a feel of the boat. How could anyone describe the feeling at the helm of a VO70 traveling with full power? Imagination is probably better than words. The boats this year are of a much more advanced technology and better ergonomics compared to last year, and they are a lot friendlier below decks. Actually, you can move quite comfortably now. I still remember the first generation of racers. My only thought back then was: “I wouldn’t like to have to get down there”. During the second generation I started thinking that “I would go only with a pay check in my back pocket” but nowadays those boats are more welcoming than the average racer.
