Αρχικά, το MedCup ξεκίνησε µε τη χορηγία της εταιρίας Breitling και µετά πέρασε στην Audi, όταν οι ανταγωνιστές της είχαν εµπλακεί στην ιστιοπλοΐα και τα πήγαιναν καλά, βλ. Volvo Ocean Race και BMW Oracle Racing που κέρδισε το America’s Cup. Όµως το εγχείρηµα ακολούθησε φθίνουσα πορεία. Για να ανακάµψει, έγινε αρχικά προσπάθεια να ενι- σχυθεί µε την κλάση των GP42, εντυπωσιακών σκαφών που ήταν µικρότερα και αναµενόταν να χρειάζονται φθηνότερες καµπάνιες. Τελικά απέτυχε. Οι λόγοι που σταµατάει το πρω- τάθληµα σύµφωνα µε το MedCup είναι οι εξής:
> Αβεβαιότητα σχετικά µε τις συµµετοχές, κυρίως στα ΤΡ52. Οι συµµετέχοντες δεν µπορούν να δεσµευτούν ότι θα συµµετέχουν σε όλες τις διοργανώσεις, µε κίνδυνο να µην είναι αρκετά τα σκάφη, ώστε οι αγώνες να έχουν ανταγωνιστικό ενδιαφέρον.
> Το 2011 ήταν δηλωµένα 8 σκάφη. Από τους 5 αγώνες του 2011, το Gladiator συµµετείχε στους 2, µε το ζόρι. Άρα µένουν 7. Το Bribon ως γνωστόν δήλωσε ότι ολοκλήρωσε τον κύκλο του και φεύγει. Άρα µένουν 6. ∆ύο είναι την AUDI. Άρα µένουν 4. Το συµβόλαιο έχει όρο να φέρει η κλάση 6 σκάφη και ο χορηγός να βάλει άλλα δύο για να υπάρχει ενδιαφέ- ρον. Τα νούµερα δεν βγαίνουν.
For the Record
At the beginning, MedCup was sponsored by Breitling and then by Audi, when the competitors of this car manufacturer had already got involved in sailing and were doing well, i.e Volvo Ocean Race and BMW Oracle Racing which won America’s Cup. However, this venture followed a downward course and, in order to recover, at first, they attempted to reinforce the Cup with the GP42 series, a class of impressive sailboats although smaller in size which could mean lower campaign budgets. The project eventually failed. The reasons behind the end of the Cup, according to the MedCup, are the following:
> Uncertain number of entries, especially with regard to the ΤΡ52s. The participants could not commit to take part in all of the events which could, in turn, be translated in insufficient number of racing boats and, therefore, low competitive levels during races.
> Eight sailboats entered the MedCup in 2011. Out of the five races held in 2011, Gladiator barely participated in two races which leaves us with seven entries. Bribon, as we know, said that they have completed this cycle and are out which leaves us with six entries. Two entries would be provided by AUDI which leaves us with four. According to the contract the class has to have six entries and the sponsor needs to contribute another two to raise competition. If you do the maths, it simply doesn’t work.
