If you took a trip back to the 1970s you'd see lots of saloon cars, but by the 1980s hatchbacks were taking over, at least in the small-to-family sector. This situation still holds true today, with relatively few traditional saloons in this market slot.

One exception is Volvo's S40. This fits between the C30 and the V50, offering buyers the option of a 'proper' saloon, in a market that's dominated by hatchbacks and estates.

There's a choice of petrol or diesel. The petrol is a 2- litre, while the diesel is available in 1.6 and 2-litre versions. We tried a 1.6 litre diesel, with the automatic start/stop system. This model, the DRIVe start/stop, has the lowest exhaust emissions of the range, at just 99 g/km, which offers significant tax advantages, whether in terms of benefit-in-kind, or in terms of the saving on a tax disc, and of course it also offers impressive mpg figures.

We found the 1.6 litre diesel pulled very well in everyday conditions. Indeed it pulled so well that if we hadn't known, we might have thought it was the 2-litre! In fact, the performance of the 1.6 lags a

significant way behind the 2-litre, but the larger engine is a lot thirstier in official tests, recording 55mpg overall, against the 1.6 DRIVe's 74.3; the choice will depend on the importance you attach to the 2-litre's superior performance.

In normal use the 1.6 diesel was splendidly quiet, contributing to the S40's quality feel. The whole car felt plush and solid, which can't be a bad start and the car we drove also had good headlights, which isn't as common as you might expect, and an excellent gearbox. Another nice feature was the compact turning circle.

There's also a choice of trim levels, but even at entry-level - around £18,000 (petrol) or £20,000 (diesel) - you get alloy wheels, climate control and electric windows all round.

Despite the S40 feeling well-built, and having a number of good qualities, we weren't sure where it really fits in. If you want load-carrying ability, the S40's "big brother", the V50, is more capable, with its estate back, and it doesn't seem to have any significant drawbacks. Whereas if you want style, its "small sister", the C30, undeniably has more eye appeal, as well as being more fun to drive, though its coupe format wouldn't suit everyone.
