New Civic is Made in England

TEME VALLEY TIMES JAN/FEB 2012 15 MOTORING with Chris Dell

Mass production of the new Civic at Honda's Swindon plant began on 19th December, having been delayed by a month, following the impact of flooding in Thailand. Honda Motor Europe President, Manabu Nishimae, confirmed that Honda remained totally committed to building cars and engines in Europe, with Swindon at the heart of Honda's European manufacturing activities. He said "The last three years have been extremely difficult for all of Honda's European operations. We have faced many challenges beginning with the economic downturn through to the two natural disasters in Japan and Thailand. Throughout this period Associates have remained committed and I am extremely proud of how they have responded to these challenges."

Honda wins Championship

Worcestershire racer Matt Neal has become one of only six drivers in the 53-year history of the British Touring Car Championship to put his name on the Champion’s trophy for a third time. He is also the only driver to have won the BTCC three times during the two-litre era, which started in 1991.

All three titles have come with his family-run Team

Dynamics squad: the first two in 2005 and 2006 with a Honda Integra, and 2011's with a factory-supported Honda Racing Team Civic.

Second in the championship was team-mate Gordon

Shedden, with Honda/Dynamics and the Honda Racing Team winning the BTCC’s Manufacturers/Constructors and HiQ Teams championships.

Matt commented: "This has been the toughest of my

three titles to win - the competition has been extraordinarily high and Gordon has been such a hard team-mate to beat. But it’s not just me who has won this championship - it is everybody in the Honda team. Gordon and I couldn’t ask for a better company or bunch of people to drive for, and they all richly deserve this clean sweep of titles."

new jobs, in addition to the current 3,000 Associates.

Prime Minister David Cameron said "This is great news and a tremendous boost to the workforce, the car industry and UK manufacturing. Honda is contributing to a real renaissance in the UK automotive industry, we have a highly skilled workforce and we continue to be at the forefront of new technology and development. Its success is of great importance to our economy and we are committed to do all that we can to see this vital industry grow and thrive."

Business Minister Mark Prisk added "It is a huge

vote of confidence in the skills of the Swindon workforce and the current strength of the automotive sector. The decision reinforces the message that the UK remains a great place to manufacture high quality products."

As well as building the new Civic and the Jazz, 2012 will see the mass production launch of the new European CR-V, and the production of a small diesel engine, also at Swindon.
