: If the rest of the car is in good condition, it makes sense to replace the engine. The retail value of a Mazda 6 in good operating condition is $6000. Since your car is now almost worthless, and it needs an engine, spending $3000 dollars to restore it seems like a good investment.

: I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it needs a battery. I have looked at batteries from department stores, repair centers, and even your AAA battery. I’m getting quotes, and AAA is the cheapest price. When I mention this to other retailers, they say it’s like comparing apples to oranges, and that AAA batteries are not as good as the ones they sell. What’s your opinion?

: I have a 2005 Mazda 6 with 131,000 miles on it. About a month ago, a spark plug came out and the mechanic said the car was down two quarts of oil. Shortly after, another spark plug came out. The mechanic put a camera down the spark plug hole and said the piston has a hole in it and the bottom on the piston broke off. Now I need to get a used engine, which I have been told will cost $3000. Do you think this is a wise investment? The car is in great shape and I would like to keep it.

: Don’t automatically assume that your digital gauge is any more accurate than a good “pencil” gauge. I have seen some pencil gauges accurate to plus or minus one percent and some digital gauges only accurate to plus or minus 5 percent. If you feel that your gauge is that much more accurate, buy one for your mechanic. I’m sure he would appreciate it.

: I had an incident with my 2006 Tacoma where the vehicle accelerated when I hit the brake. The dealer installed a device to cut the fuel if both the gas and brake are pressed. If my foot is far enough to the

When I check the tires after my mechanic services the car there could be as much as a five PSI difference. I’m guessing my gauge is more accurate. What should I do? : I don’t believe this is a design flaw. In fact this is rather common with many vehicles. In some vehicles the brake pedal sits far enough to the left or quite a bit above the gas pedal to keep this from happening. Most recently, I was driving a Mustang and depending on how I had my foot positioned on the brake pedal, I could end up pushing on the accelerator.

: Lexus has issued a technical service bulletin that describes a ticking noise. Have the dealer reference TSB number L-SB-0028-09. This bulletin describes a ticking noise from the variable valve timing area of the engine. Just a warning, the repairs can be quite extensive.

: I’m a long time reader I need your help. My Lexus RX SUV is extremely noisy for the first ten minutes
after a cold start. It sounds like an old car tappet or valve noise making this “luxury” vehicle sound like an old Singer sewing machine. Lexus says, “That’s the way they all sound”. I find this very hard to believe, as the noise was not there when the car was new but developed after about 8,000 miles. Am I going to have to live with this irritation for the next 17 months?
