31 OUR STORY
The Weirs Times was first published in 1883 by Mathew H. Calvert. The newspaper, then named Calvert’s Weirs Times and Tourists’ Gazette, was published until Mr. Calvert’s death in 1902.
One of the most remarkable features of the publication was a map of Lake Winnipesaukee which occupied the center spread of the paper. Readers will find the same map reprinted on the center pages of this, and every issue.
The new Weirs Times was re-established in 1992 and strives to maintain the patriotic spirit of its predecessor as well as his devotion to the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and vicinity.
Locally owned for over 19 years, this publication is devoted to printing the stories of the people and places that make New Hampshire the best place in the world to live. No, none of the daily grind news will be found in these pages, just the good stuff.

Community To The Editor: From the Families who
have a senior citizen in Residence at the Gafney Home for the Aged. We have offered our
services to communicate with you about the Gafney Home for the Aged. As part of a discussion
during family support group, we asked what we could do to convey our sincere feelings about the excellent quality of care that our loved ones are currently receiving at the Gafney Home. We know that our ex- perience is different from that presented in the newspapers during the summer. Of course we are not
privy to the content of the law suit that is ongoing between former employees and the administration (nor do we want to be…), but we can share our personal experiences of late as to how our elderly family member is fairing in the care of the cur- rent nursing, housekeep- ing, activities, and dietary staff. Keep in mind that the

changes in a relatively short period of time to better meet the needs of a much older population. From our perspective,
we are part of a small family that works hand in hand with the staff in order to best meet the physical, emotional and psychological needs of our loved one as each one of them faces the individual challenges of old age. We can assure everyone that the dialog is ever ongoing and productive. Thus we invite you to
come and see for yourself. Or you can give us a call so that we may answer any questions you may have as you search for an assisted living residence for yourself or a loved one. To reach any one of us call the Gafney Home and they will put you in touch. Going forward, you will maintain your own pow- erful voice to see that your needs or those of your loved one are met. We think you may then be satisfied knowing you will place yourself or your loved one into safe hands at the Gafney home. Yours truly,

To The Editor: Americans need to get
out to vote and look be- yond what we are spoon fed. The Republican Party
has been Co-opted by the wealthiest 1%, the Re- publican Elite. This Elit- ist GOP doesn’t represent anyone that makes less than $500K. The Republican Citi-
zens United travesty has opened the floodgates for corporations and the wealthy to flood us with misleading ads. Corpo- rations who, thanks to Obama, are enjoying re- cord profits, yet sit on huge cash reserves rather than create jobs. Mitt claims a positive campaign yet his PAC spends 3x as much on negative ads. Mitt’s PAC, created and run by former employees enjoys Mitts active campaigning, yet Mitt claims he runs a positive campaign. Newts assessment of Mitt’s hon- esty may be right. Let’s look beyond the infomercial’s and sensa- tionalism of the media to find the truth. Mitt made his money tearing apart American companies and sending jobs overseas. You can’t get into that type of business without contacts and capital. We need to remember that unlike most of us Mitt had the money and connec- tions of his father behind him and just like Presi- dent George W Bush, rode that inherited wealth to his supposed success. Why does anyone sup-
port the idea that Teach- ers, Firefighters and Police should take huge cuts in pay but that we shouldn’t increase taxes on income over $1 Million? Pay cuts to these civil servants will

actually affect their abil- ity to provide their basic necessities food, clothing, shelter and healthcare. At the same time we’ve proven that “trickle down” is a lie. Why should people who
will never have assets close to a million dollars protect people who earn it every year? Republicans need to re- member the economy and record debt their lead- ers left in 2008. Obama inherited the worst re- cession since the great depression, and two wars! Despite having to fight the Party of NO, blatantly trying to bring our Gov- ernment to a standstill, Obama has made great improvements from what the Republicans left us. That he hasn’t brought us back to the flourishing economy that Clinton and the Democrats left us is a little ridiculous.
