Cheryl getting ready to get down to business!
GRASSO from 24
night before and the entire road turned to ICE. Just think of pure ice with wa- ter on top if it. You know how slippery that is! Needless to say, with all
of the holes, ruts and ice we were having a real hair raising trip out (100 miles) over these roads, which are NOT plowed or sanded in any fashion what so ever. About half way out, the
guides received a radio message that the flight had been canceled be- cause of the weather (lots of fog). That was a bit of a relief as I don’t think we would have made it in time.
This, my friends, is ALL ICE! Upon arrival at Port Me-
nier, which was all fogged in we now needed a place to spend the night as the ONLY hotel/restaurant in town had burned to the ground the week before. Arrangements were
made to open up a small 7, 8 or 10 unit (depending upon which sign you read) motel that was currently closed (summer use) and have us sleep there. In the interim, we were
ferried to the local Knights of Columbus hall and fed our lunch. The menu consisted of a small bowl of soup, a scoop of what looked like “Dinty Moore” beef stew, a scoop of rice and one of vegetables. A
small piece of pie for des- ert. Better than nothing, BUT for about $24.00 a head, a bit on the high side. We decided to skip din-
ner and grab a sandwich & some chips from the grocery store. The weather did clear
during the night and we managed to fly out the next morning, loaded the trucks up and headed back to NH. All things being consid-
ered, this was a GREAT trip. Wonderful group of hunters and no matter what; we ALL had a good time.
