January 2012
A Happy New Year to all our families. I hope you all had a happy festive holiday spent with family and friends.
This newsletter introduces what will be a busy term with Prelim exams on for S4, 5 and 6 and preparation for work to be submitted to the Scottish Qualification Agency to support individual qualifications. For S4 this will be in SVS and other selected subjects only. Good organised use of study time does pay off in terms of young people gaining the grades they need to be able to make choices in the future. The most important way you can support your child to make the most of the educational opportunities offered to them is to provide them with a quiet place to study, encourage a regular timetable of completing homework and reading over notes, and try to discuss their learning with them on a regular basis. I know that this can be a challenge in some situations but it really can make a huge difference to the outcomes for young people in assessments.
At the end of last term before Christmas we held our Christmas Fair (December 10th), two Christmas Concerts (December 14th & 15th) and our Senior Dance (December 20th). My sincere thanks to all the staff and pupils who made these events happen so successfully. My thanks also go to all the parents and members of the community who supported our fair and concerts. Though the physical attendance at our concerts was perhaps down on previous years, our on-line following on Twitter proved a huge, if unprofitable, success.
As this session progresses, we will continue to try to make better use of on-line communications to ensure better and more economic communica- tions solutions. By next year, we hope to be sending our newsletter electronically as we continue our progress as a sustainable eco school. You can always access our most recent newsletter on line at http://

Can I ask all families once again to encourage their young people to stay in school at breaks? We are investing in further resources to make the inside and outside spaces of our school more attractive places to be. No pupils are allowed to leave school at the morning interval. If they do have to leave school at lunchtime, please encourage them to act responsibly and safely.
I hope that you enjoy reading or newsletter which will give you a flavour of what has been happening around our school last term.
Wishing you all the best for 2012,
E A S T L O T H I A N C O U N C I L Ross High School
