No matter when you visit, the geese will greet you.
IN THE HEART OF ROCHESTER, SILVER LAKE PARK IS AN URBAN OASIS OF OUTDOOR RECREATION AND GIANT CANADA GEESE.
Silver Lake itself is a small freshwater reservoir one mile north of downtown Rochester along the Zumbro River. A public park surrounds most of the manmade lake and serves as a hub for the city’s popular bike paths. Pay a visit and you’ll quickly discover people of all ages enjoy- ing the great outdoors in a variety of ways. The park bustles with bikers, joggers and strollers.
GREET THE GEESE The iconic geese are gracious hosts and
accustomed to visitors. They are a sight to behold, standing three feet tall with wingspans of up to six feet. More than 30,000 feathered friends reside in the park year-round, making Silver Lake the world’s largest winter concen- tration of the Giant Canada Geese.
LET THE KIDS RUN Children’s Adventure Playground at Silver
Lake Park is a wonderland for tots. This destina- tion playground is located in the park along 7th Street Northeast and is wheelchair and handi-
cap accessible. Children enjoy exploring the nooks and crannies that inspire imaginative play. Whether it’s balancing over a log, driving a train or steering a pirate ship, there are challenges for every skill level. Older children play tag on the maze of bridges, tunnels, ramps and slides.
MAKE A SPLASH In the heat of summer, there are few bet-
ter ways to spend the day than perfecting your back float. Silver Lake Pool offers a big pool, kiddie pool, locker rooms, lifeguards, beach chairs and a concession stand.
GRAB YOUR SKATEBOARD Check out the Tier one skate park near the
swimming pool. It’s a 14,000-square-foot plaza with banks, stairs, rails and ledges and ramps measured at three feet and under. The newer concrete section offers ramps at four feet and under.
GET OUT ON THE WATER Let Silver Lake Boat and Bike Rentals hook
you up with a canoe, kayak, or electric paddle- boat—no paddling required! A half-hour tour will take you around the lake. An hour-long tour will take you around Silver Lake, up the Zumbro River to the Civic Center and back
again. While you’re out there, cast a line for bluegill, black crappie and white suckers. Owner Aaron Richards believes Silver Lake
is a perfect place to try something new. “There’s no current and it’s very shallow—the middle is only five feet deep.” Though the paddleboats remain the most popular rental, guests are warming up to the wider kayaks that, according to Richards, are more stable than canoes.
TRY A BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO Explore a bit further on a bicycle built for
one or two. Silver Lake Boat and Bike Rentals offers bikes by the hour, day, week or month. “The two person side-by-side bike is a great way for visitors to get out on a bike and see the city with no balancing required,” says Richards.
BE GOOFY ABOUT GOLF New to Silver Lake Park is a 9-hole mini
golf course near the rental boats and bikes. Look for a major upgrade and brand new ob- stacles in Spring 2012. h
SILVER LAKE BOAT & BIKE RENTALS Open April 1-September 30, weather-permitting October-March 11am to Sunset. No reservations.
