EVERY MAYO CLINIC BUILDING HAS A STORY TO TELL. NAMED BUILDINGS ARE MORE THAN ROOFED AND WALLED STRUCTURES.
They honor individuals and organizations that have given significantly of their service or personal assets—and make possible the programs and facilities that bring patients help, hope and healing.
PRESERVING THE PAST “As long as the 1914 and 1928 buildings stood alone as ‘Mayo Clin-
ic,’ it was not necessary to identify clinical facilities,” explains Matt Dacy, director of Mayo Clinic Heritage Hall. “Construction of the Mayo Build- ing in the 1950s changed this situation.” The Mayo Building is named after the clinic’s founders, Drs. William
J. and Charles H. Mayo, who contributed in numerous ways to the organization and medicine. In 1919, the Mayo brothers and their wives donated the assets of their medical practice and much of their personal savings to create the not-for-profit medical center.
SHARING THE HISTORY Dacy helps Mayo preserve and communicate its history through ex-
hibits, displays, films and Mayo’s annual celebration, Heritage Days. “Just as every patient has a medical history, Mayo has an institutional history that shapes our values and helps guide our decisions today,” says Dacy. Volunteer Paul Koeller also shares the stories of Mayo Clinic build-
ing namesakes with the community, patients and visitors. “I decided to research the names behind Mayo buildings, and I try to share some of the stories as I interact with visitors,” says Koeller.
PLUMMER BUILDING “The Plummer Building was originally known by a variety of names,
such as ‘the 1928 building’ (the year it opened),” says Dacy. The current name honors Dr. Henry S. Plummer, who joined the practice in 1901. Dr. Plummer was a talented physician, scientist and an inventor,
whose contributions to Mayo Clinic were significant. Dr. William Mayo said that the best day’s work he ever did was to hire Dr. Plummer. Dr. Plummer introduced the dossier medical record system, which facilitated sharing of information, a system still used today. All of a
