NIGHTLIFE FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE— PUBS WITH PATIOS

BY EMILY WATKINS

WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DOWN IN ROCHESTER, NIGHT LIFE HEATS UP. YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK FAR TO FIND AN OUTDOOR PATIO IN THE SUMMER, A TELEVISED BALL GAME IN THE FALL, OR A QUIET, ROMANTIC SPOT IN THE WINTER.

But if a view is what you’re after, don’t miss the rooftop at Kathy’s Pub.

UP ON THE ROOFTOP Located on South Broadway, the rooftop

bar at Kathy’s is worth the hike up two flights of stairs for the gorgeous view of downtown and the unique experience. A beautiful place to enjoy the stars, it also offers the “best view of the city,” according to owner Matt Teal. The patio spans the depth of the build-

ing, accommodating about 200 people, and there’s an elevator if climbing all those steps isn’t in the cards for you. Music and twinkling

lights surround you as you relax above the bustle of the city. There are televisions and music, a DJ

spinning tunes on the weekends, and some- times there are even live bands. The spot has also been a venue for “Zumba on the Roof,” an event that gets everyone groov- ing to Latin beats with a little bit of stomping and shaking. The rooftop can’t be open all year, but they

“try to keep the season open as long as pos- sible,” according to Carley Huss, a bartender and cocktail waitress at Kathy’s. The rooftop opens as soon as possible in early spring and stays open into the fall, incorporating outdoor heaters when it gets chilly.

FEET ON THE GROUND Many Rochester restaurants have beautiful

outdoor spaces. Xavi Torres, director of res- taurants at the Kahler Hotel, suggests Martini’s as a “quiet bar” and a great place to go with friends. They have “fantastic cocktail offerings” and terrace seating all summer, which gives pa- trons front-row seats for the Peace Plaza stage at Thursdays on First.

Chester’s, just a few steps away from Mar-

tini’s, also offers patio seating. You can hear the rush of the Peace Fountain and if you’re lucky, you might catch live music outside the Chateau Barnes & Noble. Twig’s Tavern & Grille offers a patio with a

babbling stream, lights twinkling in the trees and an ambiance so pleasant you’ll forget you’re in the middle of the city. Rochesterites will brave all temperatures

to enjoy nightlife. From the end of November through mid-December, the Peace Plaza be- comes Market Strasse, a European-style mar- ket, featuring live music and dance as well as food and drink. The first two weeks of February are re-

served for WinterFest, which includes live mu- sic and the biggest ice bar in the Midwest on the Peace Plaza. Whistle Binkies on the Lake sponsors ice fishing and frozen turkey bowling. In the summer, nothing beats the patio at

Whistle Binkies on the Lake. Enjoy an escape from the city lights while tasting one of 200 beers from around the world. An evening in Rochester is enjoyable from

many perspectives. h Experience Rochester 2012 39
