Background to the Action Plan
In March and April 2011 two Community Visioning workshops took place. Facilitated by PLANED, residents of all ages and interests took a fresh look at the towns’ needs and aspirations. The Visioning Workshops consisted of the following activities:
Something Special – special qualities of the Fishguard & Goodwick community.
A Community Audit – listing the main features and facilities
The Community in the Bigger Picture – considering global and local issues
Weaknesses, Threats, Strengths and Opportunities The Vision for 2020 – Fishguard & Goodwick in the future.
Skills and Resources Audit – illustrating the variety of local skills
Translating Ideas into Action – using the information to plan projects
The workshop findings have been drawn up into this Draft Action Plan which has been circulated to all residents before being discussed at a public meeting.
The Action Plan Area
The twin towns of Fishguard and Goodwick form a close and friendly community in north Pembrokeshire. The towns are a popular destination for visitors because of the ferry port at Goodwick harbour for those on their way to, or coming from Ireland, also for those who want to stay in the area in order to take in the beautiful rugged coastal scenery in this part of Pembrokeshire.
The population of Fishguard community is 3240 (2001 Census) and is served well by the many facilities and services provided by the town. It is the main shopping centre of north Pembrokeshire with two small supermarkets, family-run shops and businesses. There is
