Animal lovers in Edenbridge are hoping for a happier new year for the horses of Cairo and have been playing their part by raising money for fodder in response to an appeal by the Brooke Hospital for Animals. The recent unrest in Egypt has meant that tourists are staying away and the locals, who usually guide the visitors around the pyramids in horse- drawn carriages, are feeling the pinch. With no income there is no money to buy food and horses have been starving to death as a result. With this in mind, Val Newton and her friends staged a childrenʼs day at her home in Edenbridge. In return for a donation, youngsters enjoyed making Christmas presents and meeting some of Valʼs donkeys.

A BUDDY scheme aimed at helping small businesses starting up in Edenbridge avoid some of the many pitfalls involved is to be officially launched in March. An Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce and Edenbridge Town Council initiative, Start Ups Edenbridge will offer help in a variety of ways to new businesses free of charge for the first 18 months to two years. Assistance will be available on information technology, communications, accounts, business planning, legal advice and banking with much of the expertise drawn from the chamber’s own members. “At this point in the economic cycle, there has probably never been a better time for start ups to get going,” explained town council chairman Clive Pearman. New businesses will also be allocated a mentor or coach to guide them through the first perilous months. Now a call has gone out for more professional people with

PEOPLE in Edenbridge are being asked to comment on the effectiveness of their town council as part of a district-wide review. Sevenoaks District Council is looking at all 30 town and parish councils in its area as part of a Community Governance Review. The deadline for comments is 24

A period of training will be provided and the commitment required will be just one or two hours a month.


“It is important that people make the decisions about their own organisations,” said Mr Pearman. “A mentor is nothing more than a talking mirror.”


He added the aim was for no company to start up in Edenbridge without a buddy from the chamber.


“There should be a fit between the coach and coachee,” Mr Pearman said. “It’s symmetry not complexity.”
