Tandridge/Edenbridge Chronicle January 2012
Edenbridge Town Council By town council clerk Christine Lane
Happy New Year
IT was sad to say goodbye to Rodney and Platts Market after their long association with the town, but it will be exciting to see the new management working with the existing traders to bring fresh stalls and to expand the range of goods available. Wendy Fair are experienced operators and have signed a five year agreement with the council, which was keen to see the market remain and flourish in the town.
If you are planning a new enterprise or are interested in having a stall, then pitches can be booked from the market manager Alan Carey at the market on Thursdays or by calling 01895 632221. Many successful businesses have tested the concept in street markets, and local entrepreneurs are encouraged to give it a try. One stall a week is also available for
local
organisations or charities to take to raise funds. These must be booked in advance through the head office on the number above.
It’s always good to start off with a few new year’s resolutions...If you haven’t made yours yet or have broken them already, then maybe you could resolve to keep Edenbridge clean and tidy and please use the rubbish bins and clear up after your dog. Waste can be placed in any of the dog bins situated in the parks and playing fields, or in the rubbish bins around the town. The newly formed team of volunteer litter
pickers are doing a fantastic job, but it would be even better if we didn’t need them.
If you are looking for a new
challenge then maybe you could consider volunteering – VAWK have a website full of ideas at
www.vawk.org.uk. If you are planning personal improvement, Kent Adult Education is a non profit organisation that provides courses for individuals and bespoke courses for businesses in areas such as creative skills, health, sport, leisure and self development. All these exciting courses are starting in January and details are available from
laura.wickham2@kent.gov.uk If you are not inspired already and need more motivation, then try the Leisure Centre to improve your health and lifestyle. They have new spinning bikes and the ambience of the aerobic studio and gym have been improved. There is a reduced joining fee at the moment, so a chance not to be missed. If you are wondering what I am planning as my resolution this year, it is to read more books, so I will be visiting my local library and making use of the opportunities to buy more new and used books in the town.

By Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce president Peter Kingham
HAPPY New Year! Let’s hope that it will be a happy and prosperous one for all of us.
Before I talk about 2012 I would just like to say on behalf of the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce a big thank you for the way you turned out for the Christmas Spectacular on the 3rd December, it was a huge success and I am grateful for all the nice comments Di and I have been receiving in the shop. Back to 2012. This promises to be a very important
year, not only because we will be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation and the London Olympics but also Edenbridge will be hosting several events organised by the chamber of commerce.
This year we will be organising a bigger and better Pram Race and Fun Day on bank holiday Monday, 4 June. An Eco Fair in association with the Edenbridge Sustainability Group is to be held in Stangrove Park on the 22 September and we are bringing a Continental Market to Edenbridge on the 24 and 25 of March.
The market should be a lot of fun as the traders, who come from all over Europe, dress up in their traditional costumes so it should be both colourful and interesting. We are hoping that our own Eden
Valley English Market will make a number of appearances during the year, bringing local trades and manufacturers to the High Street.
The Loyalty Card will continue to grow and develop during the year, while we hope to increase the number of prizes for the monthly draw. On the purely business front we will continue with our business to business networking events each month and we will also be holding a Trade Fair in May and continue with our effort to make the chamber a catalyst for growth in the Eden Valley area.
As you can see we are doing our very best to fight against the continual daily drip drip of doom and gloom we are fed by so many of the media and the recovery has to start somewhere so why not Edenbridge? We have had a lot of people come into the shop in recent months to tell Di and I that they feel things are changing for the better, which is very gratifying, so if you continue to support us as you have done in the past few months then I think I can promise you a year to remember for all the right reasons.
Rainy festival a big success
RAIN failed to put a dampener on the Oxted Late Night Festival in December. Shoppers headed into town to take advantage of the late night opening, dozens of stalls, children’s rides and other entertainment despite the inclement weather. Winners of the children’s shop window competition were Grace from Limpsfield School and Jasmine from Holland Junior School. Older category winners were Max and Beau from St Mary’s School. The Gift Company scooped the prize as the festival’s best shop window of Oxted businesses.
